my clutch slips badly goin into second gear if u are on the gas hard i took a gm mechanic that i have dealt with many times hes pretty much a friend (i work at a car lot). he said it had a problem for sure and he called gm gm said they havent had any reported problems with the clutches bein bad in any model (which i know the LT 5sp have had more problems that any) and they said i should wait a few months to see if more info has been reported on these problems and wait for a fix instead of replacing the same parts again thats bullshit i just bought it

Your response to that should be: Well now you know, so fix it. 12 months or 12k miles, they should fix anything wrong with it.

I am having clutch problems right now, it's at the dealer right now, they said there's nothing wrong with it so I requested for the service foreman to drive it, still waiting to hear back, but it's obviously there's a problem with these clutches

the friction point is at the very top of the clutch and no matter how light i drive it, it smells like it's burning. I am new to stick so i thought it was me but i had my friends drive it, a mechanic, and my dad and it still smells. I don't think they are going to cover it so i am going to take it to a mechanic and do a full test, if he finds something wrong i'm going to take the paper work to GM and see what they say.

I learned (am learning) on this car, now at 2600 miles and clutch still grabs every time like it did on day one. Friction point feels like it's halfway, maybe 2/3 down. Got some clutch smell the frist few days, but I attributed that to break-in + my learning curve.

Does the friction point change over time as the clutch wears in, or will it just start slipping with age?

it will eventually feel slightly elongated but this isn't neccisarily a sign of severe slip but it should be checked to confirm that it can still be used. You KNOW it was already time to change when the clutch won't hold after it is already engaged or if you can't get it to grab quickly

I don't think GM put a lot of thought into our clutches when making our car. I can tell you this, the aftermarket clutch companies are going to make lots of mula from us SS owners. You should start selling clutches for cobalts on the side.

Well, you have to do a lot of stuff.....and it takes a long time. I wouldn't do it myself. It's nothing close to installing an intake or exhaust so I would say it's very hard. I'd take it to a shop.

If all goes well and you know what you're doing a clutch can be installed in 4-5 hours. With my car it was more like 10 hours because of some issues we had a driving around town for things. Remember that the flywheel has to be refinished, so that may take time unless it can be done in house.

Your clutch should be fine, as long as you don't beat the living hell out of it. Burnouts, launching hard, etc. all contribute to clutch failure

you do have a short warrenty on your clutch that guy is full of ****. Now it will only be warrentied if there are no signs of abuse and if the clutch has actually failed.

I believe it's 12 months or 12k miles. But that may not be in writing, it may just be something GM does to keep it's customers happy. I know Toyota USED to put it in writing in their individual owners manual that they'll fix even the wearable parts for 12 months or 12k miles under warranty.

Really no matter how hard you beat on a car your clutch should not die within a year.

Here's a cut and paste from Chevy's website on the warranty.

* has a $0 deductible
* is transferable to another owner at no charge

The Powertrain Limited Warranty is in addition to the express conditions and warranties described in the Warranty Booklet. The coverage and benefits described in the booklet under "New Vehicle Limited Warranty" are not extended or altered because of this special Powertrain Warranty.

WHAT IS COVERED
In addition to the bumper-to-bumper coverage described in the Warranty Booklet, General Motors will warrant each 2006 Chevrolet Aveo and Cobalt for 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first, from the original in-service date of the vehicle, against warrantable repairs to the powertrain components of the vehicle. The Powertrain Limited Warranty covers repairs to correct any vehicle defect related to materials or workmanship occurring during the 5-year/60,000-mile term for the following:

Engine

* Emissions control system components that are identified in the Emission Warranty Parts List within the Warranty Booklet
* Cylinder head, block
* All internally lubricated parts
* Manifolds
* Timing gears, timing belt, and timing cover
* Flywheel
* Oil pump/oil pump housing, water pump, and fuel pump
* Harmonic balancer
* OHC carriers
* Valve covers
* Oil pan
* Engine mount
* Seals and gaskets

Transmission/Transaxle

* Case
* All internal parts
* Torque converter
* Transmission/transaxle mounts
* Seals
* Clutch
* Gaskets

Front-Wheel Drive

* Axle shafts and axle shaft bearings
* Constant velocity joints
* Wheel bearings
* Supports
* Front hub bearings and rear-axle hub bearings
* Seals and gaskets

WHAT IS NOT COVERED
As the vehicle owner, you are responsible for the performance of the scheduled maintenance listed in your vehicle Owner's Manual. In addition to the "What Is Not Covered" section of the Warranty Booklet, this Powertrain Warranty does not cover the following items:

* Wear items
* Powertrain wear items, such as clutch linings
* Wear items, such as brake linings
* Any damage caused by owner/lessee failure to follow scheduled maintenance may not be covered by warranty
* Scheduled maintenance items, such as filters, coolants and fluids, and brake pads/linings
Check your owners manual, if it doesn't say anytthing about the 12k/12 months then GM doesn't have to warrant it, but probably will if you press them because other car manufacturers DO. According to this the brake rotors are not considered a wear item. Hmm. hehe.

The 12 mo/12k miles is the standard warranty on any GM part, that's why it's not listed under the car warranty.
