Power Steering Shutting Off
No, I don't hear a thing. It just shuts off.
After talking with GM about it they offered to pay for half of the repair, however that will be alteast 650 bucks. I still can't afford it, and what's to say that it won't happen again, there's obviously a problem with the unit itself. Screw that. I'm not going to pay for a part that should never have broken in the first place. I'm just gonna wait it out and hope that there's a recall. And I don't think I'll ever buy a GM vehicle again. I'm going japanese.

Has anyone checked the connections ?
Examine the pins to make sure they are not burnt.
How a about a faulty motor overtemp switch telling the bcm that it overheating and causing it to shut down the power steering.Or the connection on the connector for this.
Heres something to try tape up the connector so that it cannot wiggle at all and see if the problem goes away.
Gm had a similar problem with the wiper motors on the safaris and it was the soldier joint for the ground and it was very intermitten .I grounded the motor casing and the problem was solved .
Just something to think about.

ive been having the same problem, gm wont help fix mine cuz im so "highly modified", but the ps has been going out randomly and i do hear the click, restart the car and its fine....for a little bit, ive checked everything, no drip, no fuse blown, battery cables good, i have no idea, and im not about to change that motor for as much as it is
Power Steering
For the past couple months my power steering has been shutting off randomly. It usually happens in parking lots after making a turn. I will get an error on my DIC that says POWER STEERING and it just dies. If I shut my car off and restart it the power steering works fine. It has been happening much more frequently the past week. It happened 3 times today. What could this be caused by? My car has 48,000 miles on it so it's not covered by the warranty. Here are the basics on my car:
05 Cobalt Sedan
5 speed manual
Thank you in advance for any help.

I just got off the phone with my dealer, they want $2000 to change out the column.
the column alone is $1624.00 and they've told me it's not the first time they've seen this go!!
what the F%$K

wow... screw that. I'd just try to find a good steering column assymbly in a junkyard and change it out myself. It's really not that hard.
I started my own thread about this yesterday. Apparently there is a bulletin out on this, I don't know what it states exactly, but my car did this with 24,000 miles on it. My dad is the service director of the dealership so he has me set up for a replacement column on thursday. Thank god for warranty.
