Hello all, I Just wanted to post a video that I made regarding the rattling in the steering when going over bumps.

Can someone not machine an aluminum gear for this?

Curious to know if this plastic gear will eventually fail once this starts. I've got the dreaded rattle in my steering column and knew exactly what it was but wasn't sure if I would have my hand forced sooner than later.

Thanks for posting this video

Thanks for posting the video, makes me want to rip into one to look at the plastic gear and see if a local CNC can make one out of brass or figure out what the plastic is and find a better plastic

I just did the same thing. I just wanted to add a note that if your car has electronic stability control like on the SS models, the casting and splined shaft are different than on the more basic models of Cobalt. I had to disassemble both gearboxes and swap the gears only. Warning though, special tools are required to do it properly.

Only fix is to replace the column? I have this rattle and it makes the car sound like a piece of ****. The rest of the suspension is tight otherwise.

I have it as well. I want to get rid of it but I've read where people have bought a new column just to have it come back in a couple thousand miles. I can't believe that no one ever made a better gear to replace it.
