On my 2.4, I have 2 broken lifters, just ordered a set of 8 new ones, is there anything I need to know before installing?

Also, the little spring in side of the lifter piece obviously came out, but I lost it to underneath the timing chain, will it just chill down there and maybe fall through when I do an oil change, or is this pretty serious?

chances are it already got eaten up by the accy or timing chain, what ever happened to it it should be ok if your lucky. there is a screen on the pick up and a baffle in the pan so dont worry to much about it getting in the oiling system.

the lifters should b soaked in oil for a min of 12hrs prior to install.

I dont plan on removing either of the camshafts or timing belt. So I wont need to do that. I'm just putting in new lifters and calling it a day.

Though in order to do this a good way, my dad told me to start the car after installation, then like 30 seconds later shut it off, do an oil change and put in a lightweight oil so it can flow through the engine quickly and take any loose and broken parts with it and drop it to the bottom and through the oil filter. Then turn the car on again with the new oil and oil filter and run for 5 minutes on idle, then do another oil change with new oil filter and done.

you didnt listen to a word i said, go ahead with your thinner oil theory/plan your dad is old school. like i said the pick up has a screened inlet and the pan has a baffle...

but if you wanna waste money on oil and filters go ahead walmart will be glad to sell it to you. it seems like your head is too far up your ass to listen to anything. and if you were smart you would research the way the oiling sytem works, its components and work from there. not go at it with a flush it to the filter theory...

 

Well from the looks of it, it looks like I can do just that.
I actually came on here to say what I was going to do and if I was planning on doing something the wrong way then correcting it. I plan before I take action especially on the most expensive thing I own.

I'm not doubting ANY of your knowdledge guys. I'm just a near graduating college student looking for a way to get this done and my car back on the road for the cheapest possible way. Just give me some advice is all I'm asking. I read the Ch 6 of the link you showed me twice, it just looks like it shouldn't be done by me especially since I don't have **** for tools besides a full socket set and full screwdriver set and pliers and other small stuff.

 

Then don't do it yourself, but when you do this you should pick up some new cam bolts as well. Make sure you time it right, no need to **** that up cause then it will get real costly. Just have someone there that knows what they are doing and have them watch you, otherwise you will never learn to do it

You don't need many tools to do this, mainly just a 10mm a 19mm and a 21mm I think, also your timing chain tensioner is 1" 3/4 I think I haven't taken one out in a while, but its something big.

 

Think i'll just drive it to my friend's shop and ask him to put the lifters in.
Shouldn't be too costly right?

 

probably a couple hundred normally, all depends on the shop and since its your friends he might cut you a deal...I can easily see ~$200 for labor

 

Just to install a few lifters? Damn I was hoping like ~$100. But oh well :/

Well the reason is, you have to remove the cams, which really isn't a big deal, but then you have to re-time the car after removing the cams. You really don't need new cam bolts if you don't take the gears off. But timing the car is the costly part. You may be able to get it done for that cheap, but I just don't think you will. Just saying don't be surprised to see ~$200 or so.

 

Oh alright, well I currently reside in a small town that has cheaper than usual labor so we'll see!

By the way, is the car safe to drive a couple miles to this place so I dont have to drop more money into a tow truck. Driving super low RPM's and taking it real easy?

it holds tension on the chain. makes life much easier. a friend and myself have done this 3 times on my car.

 

I don't know if it was the GM tool or not, but when I used one it didn't work for me

It would definitely save a lot of time and effort if you can get it to work, I might just be retarded or something

When i did my lifter for my lsj i did all the lifter, which yeah was easy but my nuckles did not like it, i rose the timing chain guide on top the head and took the cam guides out rose the camshafts up a little, used needle nose pliers and took the rockers out one by one and then lifter and then checked all the cuides or cam bearing wut ever its called. and made sure they were all ok. no play good to go. easy as hell tho

 

Yeah thats what I was thinking... Unbolt all of the bridge things holding the camshaft down, then lift the cam up a little, take out old lifters and rockers, install new lifters with old rockers. But some people are saying that I can't do this :/
