I have a 2006 ss/sc and its got 22,000 miles on it. at about 12,000 miles My rotors had to be resurfaced due to grooving and I had to get my pads replaced. I dont drive the car very hard at all. I thought it was a defective part or something... But now at 22,000 i noticed a little bit of a squeeking again. And I looked at my rotors and they are grooved again. does anyone know what might be the problem.. Cuz I really dont want to have to pay for new rotors. I would appriciate any input. Thanks

 

mine were grooved bad, and warped by 10k miles...so i took it to the dealer and they replaced all 4 rotors for free.

ya i already had them resurfaced though and they said that I could only get them replaced once under warranty. So i am thinking something is wrong... do you think they will replace all 4 of mine? They damn well should.

 

hell you guys got lucky, Ive had to get my rotors resurfaced twice and i have less then 10,000 on my car. im going to the GMPP drilled/slotted rotors and some hawk pads.

 

I think the pads gm use have to much metal in them,which tends to cause the rotors to groove and warp (heat up ) easily.
Had the same with my van and started using the lesser pad instead of the Grade a or premium pads because they have more metal to make the pads last longer at the cost of your rotors.
Seemed to of helped havent warped a rotor since.

 

mine got warped by 18,000 luckily i have warranty!

i think thats ironic, GM is who made your original rotors, and oyu wanna get their performance ones sry man but

 

No surprise. Just replaced my rotars with the aftermarket Atlas. The pads look great and seem like very high quality but I believe they are warping the rotars. I will put some high grade rotars on the car when the pads finally need to be replaced.

 

i replaced my pads with full ceramic ones and have not made out any better

 

I had mine resrufaced twice too, at 500Miles, yes 500 miles, and 23K, its nothing wrong, just junk parts, and driving habits. Everyone experiences this, small rotors for the car, you would think they would but bigger rotors on these cars. Its due to heat, its expected.

 

How bad were the grooves in you guys' rotors? Nost cars I have had get grooves in them. My rotors have small grooves in them right now and I am almost at 10k. Is this a warranty item because I didnt think it was?

 

thats not bad i have 2000MI on my car and my rotors r grooved and all warped its going in the dealer tomorrow to get that fixed and to check out y most of my fuses went in my car...and i dont drive my car to hard at all and i have the 07 ss/sc

 

Ya its covered under your bumper to bumper once only thats why i am upset about it.

the grooves in mine are pretty bad like a can stick my thumb nail in a couple of the grooves

Well, groves are normal, I had mine turned twice now and they are pretty thin to the point where its down to the raw steel, but smooth, so I think I will have them give me new ones just becuase. I know there probably thin and out of spec.

 

This is the "official" groove thickness specification:

"Brake rotor maximum allowable scoring: 1.50 mm (0.059 inch)"

You can either use a tread depth gauge to find it, or you can use a micrometer, measuring the rotor at different points including inside one of the grooves and then subtract the reading in the groove from the readings on the non-grooved areas.

Edit: I would probably not ever use this, because if you're having to measure in the first place it probably needs a new set of rotors.

 

I've got 27k on my cobalt and during my inspection they thought my brakes were brand new and even questioned me about it.

If I have to do a really hard brake, I use the engine to help slow me down

 

I regard to what you said, Yea my pads look almost new as well, from alot of highway driving. But rotors are run down...

 

you have a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty on your brakes. if your rotors have to be replaced, it wont cost you a thing

 

ive noticed mine have grooves in them as well, is that a warranty claim?!

 

Grooves or scoring that are less than .060" (approx 1.5mm) are generally not an issue, do not affect brake perfromance and is usually not an abnormal occurance. As a quick gage you can insert an older nickel into the groove and if Jefferson's hair goes INTO the groove (when viewed from a profile angle) then the groove is probably sufficiently deep to require turning.

my dealership keep telling me it is normall and due to my driving habits... but my valve cover was leaking as well at 8,000 miles, and the ******* tech couldnt find it. The shop foreman came out to my car with me and said there is no leak, i popped the hood, and ran my finger along the edge of the valve cover and came up with fresh oil on it, I said to him, well if that isnt a leak, then i dont know what it is.

btw, they wont replace the rotors or pads but they did fix the leak..

 

i've got 20k on my car, have driven it at the track repeatedly, drive it routinely on this road course and my brakes are still buttery smooth.

he said if i paid for the performance rotots he would install them for free......

 

I have 23,000km.. my fronts were machined 3 times, and my rears were machined twice. Took it in last saturday for brake pulsation again, they replaced them, with the higher quality ones that they are using as replacements now, they said it was just faulty rotors.

They are under warranty for 3 years or 36,000km, its apart of the normal GM parts warranty.

Take it to any other GM dealer.
