Self adjusting clutch?
Self adjusting clutch?
Does the cobalt ss/sc have a self adjusting clutch in it? Here is my story as to why I ask this.
I have one of those aftermarket mats in my car without realizing it..it ended up pushing itself up underneath my pedals and folding over, preventing me from pushing my clutch all the way in. I got used to shifting that way...probably for a good month. Finally I realized my car hasn't been feeling as fast as usual and when I looked at my pedals I saw that. Now with the mat removed I can push my clutch pedal all the way to the floor...but I realize now that its catching right at the top of the pedal...either at the top or really close. It used to catch in the middle. Does this mean my clutch is wearing out or is it self adjusting?

its self adjusting as in it has no adjustment, its a hydralic clutch. the pressure plate is a self adjusting design, it will keep the clutch pedal releasing at about the same point untill it can no longer compensate for the wear.
the clutch on the ss/sc releases about mid point of the pedal travel. if its higher the clutch disk is getting thin, however unless its slipping you dont need to change it yet

the same can be said about every stock vs. aftermarket part though. just because an aftermarket part is better doesn't mean the stock part blows.
Everyone has their personal opinions. While you may like the stock clutch I hate it. the clutch is the reason I personally classify these cars as one of the hardest manual cars to drive. It grabs hard one minute and it's soft the next and then back to grabbin hard again. It's impossible to get a consistent feel from it. I've had the same experience with every SS/SC I've driven that had a stock clutch...
Even my 2008 SS\TC's clutch was at the top of the pedal on release, it makes for the really quick\ no-lift shifts. If it releases near the floor, bad for quick shifts and no-lift, to much travel and release.
Problem with mine is that I tried doing a few burn outs and did not have all the traction gadgets turned off, so I saw a cloud of blue clutch smoke and the awful smell that goes with it. Now my new car 5000 miles from new releases at the floor and is difficult to engage in any gear. Clutch is ( nearly) gone. This will be interesting to see if GM will replace it as all my miles are freeway for work, and the car is two and half months old from new. I know clutches are not covered under warranty but I'll be damned oif I'm going to have this go out in such a short time. I've never had a clutch fail in less than 37-45k miles out of 5 diffderent cars with a M-tranny.
this is not good. I now know not to do a burn out with this car no matter what as it seems not all the traction control nannies are off when the disply says they are. Test drove many 2008 new SS\TC's and all their clutches released at the top. An Engineer said that's the way it's supposed to be in this specific car.

LOL GM is definately not going to replace your clutch. How man SS/SC guys went through the same thing with their cars and got shot down by GM. Just go buy an Exedy and you'll be MUCH happier!
so im looking at clutches. I found a decent site. This is probably a self explanatory answer but should i trust a clutch off of ebay..or an ebay store. Also whats the difference between organic and regular clutches. last question is ..I have a mildly upgraded car. Should I go with a stage one or a stage two????
Go with this...
http://www.amazon.com/Exedy-GH02SD-C...2611457&sr=8-1
It's more expensive but get it! You won't be sorry! INHO it's the best clutch out there for our cars. I'm sure you can find it cheaper on other sites *cough* check the vendor section *cough* but that was the quickest i could find the clutch with a picture and description.
