Service Air Bag

2010 LNF, 32000 miles

Service Air Bag comes on every time I start my car and red airbag light stays lit on the dash. Any suggestions and/or recommendations other than taking it to stealership and paying to get it diagnosed?

Check you fuses and under seat connections, if its not those, then dealership airbags are nothing to mess with

clock spring. everyone says they are scared to take the airbag out or its not something to mess with with. But I've taken my airbag out with my car running before. Its not that big of a deal. If you were closer to me man I could take a look at it.

It's a common issue with at least the TC Cobalts.. The Passenger Presence Sensor (PPS) in the passenger seat goes bad. So it shuts down the airbags, rather than failing to airbags on. Makes sense, right? Lol.

The dealership wanted over $800 to do mine. I laughed at them and walked away. That was 1.5 years ago.. I did find the PPS system on GMPartsGiant for less than $300. Either way, if you install it yourself, I think the dealership has to calibrate it.

If you don't know what you're doing it can be a big deal, but if you understand how they work its not an issue

I am also having this exact issue. I was going to check all of my connections for the passenger sensor before I take it into the dealership.

How does one diagnose if it is the passenger seat sensor or not? Other than just making sure everything is plugged in? Would ScanXL pick this up by any chance?

Taking the seat out and driving it will cause the light to stay on. Mines been on for years and the dealer has to calibrate it or whatever to fix it.

It's def the passenger seat sensor, when I fondle the wires under the seat it sometimes trips. It doesn't always come on either. Sometimes when you start it'll be off and stay off, sometimes as you start it'll come right on, sometimes when you start it'll be off and then like 10 mins later it'll come on...

Anyone has an idea how exactly this sensor works to maybe service it or is replacement a MUST to fix?

Also, best place to find a replacement?

I think you can order the module online. There was a thread for it awhile back when I had this problem and some were able to order the module and do it themselves

Mine did this before and over night the car battery would die, i first replaced the battery with a cheap one. Broke the vent tube and all was well. Yup Service air bag light was fixed too. Tho it did chime the other day but that was it.

My car has been out of bumper to bumper for two years and the airbag issue is the only problem I've had that wasn't my fault...

Its a common occurance for the cobalt TC. Happens all the time to me and the issue is a wire contact under the passenger seat. Whats happening is the wire gets pinched when the seat is slid back and forth. Pretty sure there is a customer letter for this. I never got it fixed cause its not really a problem worth letting someone else get in my car.

To make the light go off, turn the car off, open the driver door so everything completely shuts down. Start the car back up. airbag light goes away. Its a safety issue then GM should pay for and it should not be up to the customer to fix.

another one with a cause listed and more detail.

Bulletin No.: 09-09-40-003A

Date: July 26, 2010

Subject: SIR/Airbag Light Illuminated, DTC B0081 and Passenger Presence System (PPS) Code 23 Stored (Replace Passenger Seat Belt Retractor and Re-Route Wire Harness)

Models:
2006-2008 Chevrolet Cobalt Coupe
2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt SS Coupe
2006 Pontiac Pursuit Coupe (Canada Only)
2007-2010 Pontiac G5 Coupe Supercede:
This bulletin is being revised to update the model years. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 09-09-40-003 (Section 09 - Restraints).
Condition

Some customers may comment that the SIR light is illuminated. Upon investigation, the technician may find the following SDM code stored:

DTC B0081 71: Passenger Presence System Invalid Serial Data Received With Passenger Presence System (PPS) Flash Code of DTC 023

Cause

The wire on the Belt Tension Sensor (BTS), that is part of the retractor assembly, may become open or acquire a ground near the sensor. If the BTS is rotated toward the rear of the vehicle, added stress is applied to the wire bundle that may cause an open or a ground path. The two photos below illustrate the possible effects on the wiring. Each photo indicates the area to investigate at the arrow labeled (1).

I just did also. Although the earlier post about saying he replaced his battery and then it went away intrigues me as I'm also having some random misfires. Although solving the issue by replacing the battery doesn't make much sense to me...

I checked all the wires under my seat and none are contacting anything nor damaged. I guess I'll have to rip my pillar panel off to get at e belt tension sensor. The light comes on for ten seconds, goes off for twenty, and repeats, over and over and over again. Super annoying, I wish the light would just stay on so my DIC is not flashing every two seconds.
