Stupid airconditioner and the hvac controls......

Does GM think we are all dumb and can't figure out those fancy knobs and buttons? Shouldn't the AC turn on only when I push the stupid AC button? It doesn't. If the knob is set at floor or defrost the AC is on. The AC light is not lit but the AC is in fact on. If I want the air on the floor in the cold position that does not mean I want the AC on. Same for the defroster. Anyone else noticed this?

Yes.
And why do the vents blow out LOTS of air even when the whole system is turned OFF? It seems like even if it's turned completely off, if the knob is set for cold, the a/c is still bowing...and if the knob is set for hot, I can feel hot air blasting me in the face. I shouldn't have to adjust the heat settings when I have it OFF. Why does it do that?!

Or when its on the feet position some air still comes out the defroster vents? Does GM think we can't figure out how to blend it ourselves? Oh and why won't the recirc button work in some settings? Just blinks and flips me off. Stupid.

EDIT: As a smoker I need all of those settings to control the air pressure in different situations to keep the cabin smokefree.

I keep thinking about bypassing the A/C pulley altogether... getting a shorter belt...

if you want this to stop press the recirc button that is opposite the ac button.....you are getting blasted because air pressure drom your driving is pushing the air in when it is on the outside air setting......and it does **** me off how the ac comes on when in defrost or floor.......this means i get hp loss when racing someone while defrosting......damn GM

it's wired like that to keep the clutch on the compressor from setting up during periods of disuse (like winter)... GM started doing that as far back as 1988.

Personally, I have gone without A/C and i will never go without it again!

The A/C is wired up to come on during front defrost to remove humidity from the incoming air. This keeps the inside of the window from fogging up. You also can't use recirc in defrost mode for much the same reason.

Airflow still happens with the blower off to keep fresh air flowing into the cabin in case of an exhaust leak through a body seam. This is a safety feature.

Putting the a/c on feet and having air come out the front defroster vent? That's probably some over-paid engineer's miscalculation.

Stupid just like an oil light instead of a guage. I guess people are dumber these days. Ive always run mine occasionally in the winter.

Yeah. I know how all that works but I like doing it myself. There are times when I don't want it done for me. Might as well have paddle shifter auto tranny and traction control.

I wanted to hook up an Oil pressure gage in my Cobalt (had one in the 96 and 98 Cavaliers)... guy at the Chevy dealer (someone I trust) told me that it wasn't possible on a Cobalt...

Why?

LOL my a/c doesn't even work. It could be something little like not having free-on but all I know is that it blow hot air. I've had it on with the windows down for 15 minutes.....NOTHING but HOT AIR. I never use it though so I really don't care enough to go to the dealership. I would rather not have a/c in the car. I can deal with the windows down....even if it's 100 degrees out.

Yeah, the lack of any sort of oil gauge really ticked me off... instead we have a stupid ass "Oil Life" percentage crap which really doesn't even mean anything... it's always been at 70% or so when i've changed oil.

I hate new cars... most of my favorite cars are pre-1995 or so.

I have no idea. Id have to dig around and find the oil pressure sensor. Shouldn't be too tough. Maybe he thought it wouldn't be possible because many cars' oil pressure sending unit is behind the filter and our filter is funky. Must be a sensor on the block somewhere though.

I thought the exact same thing about mine!... I had it on full blast through just the top and it was blowing hot air. I pressed in that button that like does a half swirl and it started blowing cold. Phew lol. Almost died in the carwash from heat.
