Synchro problem?

Occasionally it seems like i hit a wall when i try and shift from 1st into 2nd...i read where it is a synchro problem? Can someone verify this? and will the dealership fix it under warranty?

Having come from an Acura RSX-S I know they had HUGE problems with the exact same thing. They even got a petition together for it.

In that case and I'm sure this is the same. It was indeed the synchros and quite a few people took it to the dealer.
Many of the dealers did replace synchros but the problem persisted. Myself I tried different fluids - Royal Purple, Amsoil... and it did little. The biggest improvement I had was replacing the motor mounts with stiffer ones.

Welcome to my world.

I've had this problem since a few months after I got my Cobalt.

I hear about it from multiple people though, so it's not just your car.

It is annoying as hell though, 1st to 2nd shifts are so crappy because of that wall; it makes launches a bitch for me.

Oh well, just rip it into gear harder I guess; hell if I care, there are warranties for a reason.

its the shift linkage pin.aka roll pin i had the same issues, it self destructs when you miss a shift, and makes for sloppy shifting, hard shifting, and prevents the car from going into gear sometimes. mine was covered under warranty. good luck, its a very common problem it prevents you from grenadeing your trans

Don't know about the OP, but for me it happens about 98% of when I shift 1st to 2nd.

Yeah, I always get a constant wall.

Well, 98% of the time anyway.

I really couldn't care less because it's going to be snowing in less than a month, but I'd like it fixed by the beginning of next year.

LMAO. No... if the pin is broken you won't be able to shift at all.

synchro = grinding going in gear

linkage cables = wall, sloppy shifting, very very occasional grind

fix the linkage cables and keep them tight so you dont get the dreaded grinding problem and need to replace the trans. 110.00 not covered under warranty but worth it.

I do it once a year.

Not under warranty, huh?

We'll see how quickly that changes when I walk in those doors.

Haha.

My dealership hooks it up anyway, so it shouldn't be a problem.

I get this sometimes too, causing me to miss the gear. I grind going into reverse about 50% of the time too, keep meaning to get under and check the roll pin. Good luck at the dealer.

I think he was talking about $110.00 once a year as preventative maintenance.

Is there a synchro on reverse? I too get a THUD every once in a while (1 2 shift) and noticed it today in a parking lot. I realized i was also pulling back into gear too soon and not holding in the clutch long enough. What kind of Lucas or Royal oil does the SS manual tranny take?

the reason why there is a wall is because the huge difference in ratio of 1st and 2nd...you will notice if you in 1st and shift at 3500 or 4000rpms...its a smooth shift from 1st to 2nd...also it might be because you don't let the rpms drop enough when you let go of the clutch

I'm talking about a wall just sitting at a redlight and trying to put it in gear to take off...

i pay 110.00 a year for the linkage cable tightening as preventitive maitenance. The cables are considered wear and tear.
