I know this has been discussed in the past, but it's worth a shot. Supposedly, the cam phasers don't "park" correctly. For people that have the rattle can sound after start-up, try turning the car to the "ON" position (engine off). Let it sit for 10-15 seconds (prime the HPFP); then, start the car. Obviously, you might have to replace the cam phaser solenoids, but it might help/fix the problem. Just looking out for you guys.

I'm curious to see if this helps/eliminates the issue. It usually happens in colder weather.

It's tough to get a vid at least for me cause it only happens like 10%< of the time.

I really think it has a lot to do with it.

This is the only video I could find with the sound (best one):

My car does this on cold starts too. The guys at GM said that its normal for our cars because of the variable valve timing.

That might not be good. I hope it's the cam phaser issue, lol. There's supposed to be a thread whereas this GM engineer said it was "normal." I probably didn't look hard enough or something.

True, the cars do have the VVT; however, like the MS3's DISI/VVT, they have to replace the VVT solenoid. But, I've heard "normal" thrown around a $hitload of times, haha.
As long as it doesn't do it more than a couple of seconds (constantly), I think we'll be ok.

Mine has made that noise for years now on cold start ups. Lasts for no more than a couple of seconds. Am I worried? No.

Here's a good thread on this: https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/08-1...14/index3.html

Here's a good post within said thread:

"This "ratcheting" noise at cold start up (when it's really cold outside) has been answered long ago by a GM engineer (Bill if I remember correctly) and it is the cam phasers. He went on to say that it does NOT hurt the car and it's basically the phasers running dry for a few secs and once they get oil it stops. I run 0w-30 for the winter and that noise has never come back after 2 winters."

I wish we could find Bill to answer this, lol, or at least find the thread.
