Update: Broken Downpipe

So I just got off the phone with the dealer where I got my balt and they said that it appears as if I hit something on the road that caused the pipe to be pushed up and break the flex piece. As a result of the hole in the flex piece and having to limp the car back home and then to the dealer, there is some heat damage to some wiring harnesses as well as a blown exhaust manifold gasket. The warranty I have from them is 3 month or 3000 miles with 100/100 coverage and a $100 deductible. They are telling me that since i hit something which is evident by the gravel and dirt in the underside of the vehicle, that the warranty company will not cover any of the repairs. They are also trying to charge me $2000 for that ******* converter pipe. Absolutley ridiculous. Just thought I'd let ya'll know how my horrible first week as a Cobalt owner is going.

h says he has wiring issues too...which i dont beleive, and a blown manifold gasket, which i also dont believe..

this used to be a common problen due to motor torque breaking the flex

I agree, I highly doubt that was all caused by the flex pipe being broken. They are trying to screw you. I would take the car somewhere else and have it checked out.

exactly what i was thinking. and if infact you did hit something to cause the flex pipe to break... a LOT more would be broken. which would probably include the radiator, oil pan, trans possibly, and i say those becaise if you hit something you would be moving forward. and if it broke the flex pipe....it would have hit those first.

first off i appreciate all the feedback. i am running the 06 sc i have looked at the pipe online for like 390 new from GM. So 2000 is ******* nuts. but the place where it is at is where the warranty is from and did i mention its a ford dealer? think they are just jealous of the car to be honest. they said worst case im lookin at like 2200 for parts and labor but i told them they can either keep the car and give me my money back or fix it for free. and yea the doucher at the service center said that there was grass and dirt in the undercarriage which makes him beleive that the car was taken offroad. OFFROAD?!!? HES ******* NUTS!! i went down one of those driveways thats gravel on the sides and in the middle has a hump of grass and ****. i went down it fine and on the way out is when i heard the pipe break. offroad?! what a fuckhole. i want to go up there and just ******* waste those ******** but im just going to sit here and cry because of all this.

Here is what I would do.

Either take it to a real GM dealer or have a member on here look at it.

I'm no expert but I could put it on my lift and tell you what you needed pretty quick.

I would get a new manifold gasket, and new downpipe. Just replace it all. I did full exhaust myself with little to no experience. You could do all of this for less than $250

the dealer is trying to screw you dude. those parts are extremely easy to replace first off, a good tech could do it in under an hour if your replacing your manifold gasket. if its just the downpipe 20 minutes tops.

I would do this except a) I don't have a place to do it at and b) they are saying that there is damage to some wiring harnesses and a fuse box because of the exhaust leak and ****. I honestly don't know what to do right now except just get it fixed and tell them to **** off after that.

Please don't pay them that much.

Did you have a check engine light on when you took it in. I bet you didn't rip any wiring.

Even if you ripped the wiring on an 02 sensor you could likely buy a new one and unplug the pigtail and plug the new one in.

I'm telling you with a jack, jack stands and simple tools you can do the whole exhaust in an afternoon.

Don't pay an idiot $2k for such a thing. I bet we can find a member to help if you actually would ask for help.

^^ X2

If you don't have a CEL I doubt the wiring is damaged. There isn't much wiring on the back of the motor to damage.

You could replace the gaskets and downpipe with someone helping you in 2 hours easy for $500 or less.

Ok, so I'm going to call the dealer, get him to tell me what codes he got of the CPU because the CEL was on when i took it in and i couldn't see anything wrong with any sensors or wiring when I looked at it before i took it in so I'm thinkin if anyone here has a D/P for an 06 SS/SC either aftermarket or OEM and is wiling to part with it I will go ahead and do the work myself. And if anyone is in the Central PA area and wiling to help a brotha out, that would be awesome.

ok so i just got the codes from the dealer, they are a P0420 a P0068 and a P0101. he also said that the master cylinder resevoir has heat damage as well as the fuse box cover and some other wires and a windshield washer hose. im about to check out the codes now over in the other section of the site but if anyone knows them off hand it would be greatly appreciated

yea i figured one of the codes had to do with the fact that i had a hole in my D/P. Anyone know ofa website where you can look these up at?

Ok i found out the P0068 and P0420 still looking for the P0101 code though. The first two go along with what the dealer is saying and that is with the hole in the D/P and they also said the the evap tube is melted.

the P0420 is because of the second 02 sensor. Been there done that. It is most likely caused by the hole in your dowpipe.

The last two seem like a MAF sensor problem. Haven't seen them much.

I replace the downpipe and the 2 gaskets on the downpipe then start diagnosing the 101 and 069 codes.

from some very exstensive and quick research i have found that the 101 code is most likely caused by and O2 sensor. not a big deal. it sounds like everything that they are telling me is right so far i just dont know about all the wiring bs. they say they need to replace a bunch of wires and harnesses that were damaged due to heat as well as the brake master cylinder resevoir and the fuse box cover. i wont really know much more until the morning when more negotiations are done and some more heads get ripped off. i mean really, i had the car 5 days and drove it like 600 miles and then this. come on. they should fix it for free but the exhaust apparently is so convienently not covered in the warranty and if it were they wouldn't warranty it anyway becase i took it off the road and onto a ******* driveway. come on. after this debacle, im going to a chevy dealer from now on.

Hmmm, fuse box cover you say.

I don't think that needs replacing.
