weak wheel studs.....

alright... so i've spent 3 days now tryin to get my car on the road when all i was doing was swappin out to a new set of wheels. Ended up replacing 10 studs. 4 snapped in half w/ very little pressure, and the other 6 crossthreaded horribly. I always hand tighten each one before I use any tools on them... so I know none of them were crossthreaded by my hand because I wasn't having to put any effort into them... has anyone else had problems w/ these things?

no I hadnt' even got that far yet... they werent hot or anything... it had been sittin in the garage for about 8 hours... I usually tighten them as much as I can by hand.. then use a 4 way to snug them up.. and torque them down w/ the torque wrench.. I had just put the 4 way on and made like one turn maybe two w/out any strain and they just snapped... or in some cases crossthreaded

I made the mistake of using a lbs/inch torque wrench at 100lbs and couldn't figure out why the wrench wouldent click and I was forcin like a ****. Had I not finally noticed it was in inches and not fett i woulda busted the studs. Ialways put a bit of never seeze as well.

ok. there just week ass studs then. is there alot of corosion?

Or maybe your not telling us that you are really a 300lb Defesive lineman and when you hand tighten them its more than enough torque and when you use the 4 way they just cant take it anymore.

Well I'm stumped. You must have got some bad ones. Shouldn't your warranty cover the studs?

yeah I would think but it wasn't worth the car sittin at the dealer for a week or possibly more over an hour worth of work tops that I could do myself easily

It seems like we must not be getting all the info here. Everyone has broken one once in a while but 10 at one time????
What wheels are they, and what nuts??

Very weird! I have taken my wheels off many times to do brake painting touch ups and haven't run into this problem. I do not use an impact or torque wrench though!

Are you absolutely sure your new wheels are 5x110 or whatever they are supposed to be? If they were lets say 112, they might look like they'd fit but would put side pressure on the studs when you tried to tighten them.
Are you sure the nuts are 12.5mm or whatever they are supposed to be? You got new ones with the wheels, right?

Not flaming you, it just seems something isn't right.

Yeah, that's the problem I'm having here. It doesn't make sense. I've broken maybe 2 in my whole life, don't use impact tools, and both were taking rusted nuts off with a 4-way.

If he had that many failed/cracked studs, he was damn lucky that his wheels didn't fall off when he was driving!

I'm not flaming him but did you see my last post? I almost bet that his new wheels are the wrong drilling or the lugs are wrong for the wheels or studs.

just got back from the place I bought the wheels... measured every single wheel.. all of them 5x110.. correct lugs and all... as far as wheels and lugs.. everything is right... I dont use impact... Like I said... 5 of these happened when removing them... might I add that the car hadn't been driven for at least 6 hours when these happened.. the first 5 it had been sittin for roughly about 2 hours... still plenty of time to cool off... i've changed wheels myself on everything i've ever owned... countless times... and have never until now stripped or broken any studs... that's why i'm so confused as to why so many have stripped and/or broken...

dealer broke one doing a tire rotation for me (tried to tell me that i had been driving around with a broken 1) i told him no because they put the same aftermarket lug nut that i had on all the other wheels on with a new stud

i just changed my wheels i know they are 5x110 and i was taking my winter rims off for my summer rims and and after about 2 rotations the stud just come right off i was using a 2ft ratchet and was going straight back no diagnal pressure

dealer wouldn't do anything for me wanted to charge me 5+ dollars for the part plus 85+ dollars to put it on im working with a guy at the factory to cover the 90+ dollars

I havent had to replace any on the cobalt yet, but on my blazer its extremely easy, just slide them on through the back of the hub (buy new studs, pound the broken ones out) and tap it in a bit, and it will seat itself in there the rest of the way as you tighten the lugs.
