New Car Detailing

Hopefully Hat Trick Stu can chime in ASAP on this one... others.. feel free as well.. I just know Stu is the detailing Guru round these parts.

But here is my deal.. I have heard Stu among others say "DO NOT WAX/POLISH A BRAND NEW CAR!!!" I guess your supposed to let the paint on a brand new car "cure" for about 2-3 months.

Well.. my 2009 was build week of Aug. 18th.. So .. the paint has been on the car for about 3 weeks now.

I was just curious about a few things.

1- Why do we not wax/polish/detail new cars

2- What is the Worst that could happen if I were to do this?

3- Should I not even be washing/drying/Quick Detailing my new car till the 2 month mark?

Thanks all

Fiscal

you should detail a brand new car, it's called preventive maintenance, and he has said all that in his thread bro.

but the paint has t cure for a certain amount of time before you wax or polish it. until them, just wash it and dry with a microfiber towel.

1- Paint has to cure and in this proces it releases agents....the wax doesnt allow them to release

2-early failure of paint

3- you can wash/dry but i wouldnt put any kind of sealer on there period

Thanks for responses all. Sticky if you want Mods. Dunno if its sticky worthy.

But one more question.

Will spraying any type of quick detailer on mess up the curing process?

I washed and dryed ( microfiber all the way). Then tonight I was itching to try out Meguiars new "ultimate detailer" I picked up. So I used it on my new balt. Assuming we are just talking about, as said, sealers/polishes/waxes?

Also- I knew that curing had to do with drying, but I didn't know it was the releasing of agents over time. That makes a lot of sense now. I was worried it had to do with the rubbing an friction. I was almost afraid to wash and dry a lot( I tend to wash every 2 days if time permitts) Its a bonding thing between me and my Baby

P.S. Don't take this off topic please, but Meguiars new Ultimate Detailer uses some form of nano-tech (not their NXT ****)....its A LOT better than their normal "Quik-Detailer" in the burgendy bottle.

i believe you should be ok with quick detailer but i would take it easy on washing and all until the paint has cured....mainly b/c it isnt as hard as it could be and is easier to induce swirl marks and marring....

mainly because if you trap the gasses in that have to "cure" out of the paint by waxing, you can cause bubbling and peeling of the paint, premature fade, etc....

ok guys thanks. Yeah... Um.. that detailer I used seems to have coated the car in a wax type sealant. I mean.. I rub my finger lightly across hood and I can feel it. Almost no friction what-so-ever. So I am thinking.. this new Meguiars detailer **** shouldn't be put on till at least a month from now.

Well... we have a huge storm system coming this way here in Michigan as we speak.. missing lansing now though. But .. I guess I will drive around in the rain today, despite my hours of detailing last evening.

Thanks for responses all. This thread is pretty much settled for me at least.

I am pretty sure its okay to wax a car the day you get it...the paint cured right at factory. They have high temp **** to help the paint cure at a much faster rate than a normal paint job..so if you wax it your fine...I have already claybarred and waxed mine and the shine is amazing and I have not seen any trouble from it....I claybarred it to get the rail dust off from shipping.

Hatrickstu isn't it correct that from factory the paint is already cured? That link says for a new paint job and that is very understandable...body shops do not have the equpiment to cure paint such as they do at the factory.

Guess we will wait and see but I think if this was going to be a problem it would be included in the manual.

Why would you risk it? For the instant gratification of a nice shine?

I have this new Meguiars Ultimate Quik Detailer on there.. and it feels as if it used its ZOMG CRAZY nano-tech to put a very temporary seal over my cars surface. I am going to be using dish soap to strip it all off today...... **** it... I am having to put the car up for the winter anyways here in Michigan....going to be a sad day......stupid College...stupid last quarter for my bachelors.... ! rant rant

thanks for all responses.

no!!! dish soap will be way to harsh....that quick detailer is barely wax so a normal wash will remove it

Well if wax is going to harm the paint I know dish soap will. Though honestly if your going to clay bar a car and want to get all the wax off dish soap is the way to go. I am just glad I checked the build date of the car and it was in may so I paint will not be affected since it had at least 3 months to cure.

I am a detailer at a chevy dealership, and along with the pdi (pre-delivery-inspection) sheet it has a spot for the detailing crew. it says to apply a coat of wax as part of getting the car lot ready. Have heard of not waxing a new paint job, but not from factory because they already go through an oven to cure the paint. Also they would have a big do not wax sticker on the car since they give paint a 3 year warranty.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Thank you for the back up....I knew I thought it was waxed whenever I picked it up because the paint felt smooth.

My car definatly came waxed from the dealership... where the hood was painted only a week before.

I guess it comes down to... I don't trust the dealership..... paint is 3 year warranty.. effects of what we are talking about will take about 3 years to show up.

Its not like if you wax your brand new car, there will be bubbles the next day.

I trust Stu... but both sides make good points here.

But for sure, it came waxed from the dealership.

BTW-- Don't mean to beat a dead horse.. but Im not using the normal Meguiars Quick-Detailer... This **** is brand new from them.. and I can tell from putting it on last night.. its a lot different. It claims to last through a couple washes. Says on the back of the bottle " Full effects take place after 12 hours of curing" For some Quick Detailer!

Its in a black bottle and is called Meguiars Ultimate Quik-Detailer.

Thanks everyone
