What is the benefit of swapping the sub-frame?

since mines an 04, I'd have to buy an 04 specific front transmission mount. If I ever plan to put rotated mounts I'm screwed. Powell would be the only guy I'd be able to get em from. Since I have a 05 cobalt subframe. I can just swap it in and get the upgraded FE5 control arms already in there. Along with knuckles and what not but I believe they all the same. With the 05 subframe. I'm able to buy any competitors rotated mounts or just run LNF mounts. I plan to run lnf mounts for now on all if they don't work, I'll throw in some ottp stuff. Those are the gains.

The next project has begun. I was going to sell the arms but 1 was bent. I managed to get 1 but the bushing is shot. So I'm weighing my options if I should get some ottp or stockers.
Going to swap everything into the redline. I'm going to lose ABS but look at those thick lnf axles!!!!! Gotta get the rear brakes off in the next couple of days and gonna swap it all in.

Car came with a check engine light. Bank 1 slow response. It also came with a brand new oxygen sensor. Put 2 and 2 together. Swapped out the oxygen sensor. Gonna put some miles on it and get it inspected. Hopefully it passes.

Started to to do the brake swap. Tear down started off easy. Everything was coming out with little to no force. Until it came time to take the axle out. I spent about 3 hours trying to take it off. I went as far as removing the whole control arm to gain access. Needless to say. It did not work. I checked the dates on the axle tag. It's from 2004! Guess what. Original axles. I'm in shock. Took the whole halfshaft off. Plugged up trans with spare shaft I have. Heated it up real good. Used a big purse to hit it. Only budged about 2 MM. at that point I was tired. I heated it once more. Gave it a good whack. The bearing exploded and grease came out. Halfshaft earring no good. I started to think. I used my diesel tech skills and pondered of a few ideas. I heated up the tone ring. Smacked it. It moved. I KNEW IT. It's a pressed ok toner ring.

Measured up how much of the axle goes in. Went to town with a air cutter. Cut it as close as I could. When I took it apart. Rust. Rust everywhere. The thing was rusted shut. There was no way a penetrant was getting in there. I removed the toner ring. Counted the teeth. Redline speed toner ring has 30 teeth. The mechanically inclined will know what to do with this information. I hope this informations shows up on searches!!!!
it got dark. I left the car on jack stands. Part 2 of toner ring fix incoming. I have a welder. I have a spare shaft. No need to cut anything. Stay tuned 😎

So decided to just do some sloppy at home repair. Was looking for somebody with a lathe but nobody was near me. So I went to town with my grinder. Measured up the axle from the 04 where the ring sits. 38.6mm thickness. Without the ring axles have a 40.2mm. Remove the Powdercoat if that's what it is. Your at 39.2mmm. Wasn't enough. Grounded down some more. Reached 38.8mm all around. Wasn't that uniformal. Decided to put the ring on. It cracked as soon as it cooled. Crap! Though of things. Decided to try a high heat spot weld. Closed it as much as I could. Spot welded it. It worked. Used a die grinder inside the wheel to open it up. Slid it on. With little to no force. Went on fine. Lined it up with the old axle. Spot welded it with my hazard freight welder. Not bad imho. Threw some really shitty paint I had laying around. Looks new to me!
Onward with the repairs. Just got a clutch for it for free with a flywheel. Time for a big job.

Gotta hunt for a damn 04 shaft. I don't think this is gonna be balanced. I wish I had a way to check it. We shall see how the car behaves on a dyno when I take it.

Got the halfshaft I ordered up. Got it with the ECM and speed sensor. Total was 150 for shaft and ecm shipped with sensor.

The control arm bushings cost me 100$ new. I need them for the control arms. Dam. 250$ spend on this so far. Gotta sell the ecm to make some cash back and keep the budget extra low

Ok so I had to get this done. Took out the rear axle beam. Had a hiccup on the way. 1 bolt was seized on. It broke the cage. Cut the bolt off. Remove the block. Removed the cage. It's gonna be a bitch to install a lock nut in there now. I've done this before and it's not fun. Gotta align the whole axle beam and then weld the nut a bit from bottom. Then hit the bolt on. 5/6 bolts are on.
Lnf rear beam is on somewhat. Out with the old. In with the new. Look at those shocks though!!!!
i got a spare set somewhat decent off my old cobalt.

Shoved a flange but in there. Started to thread in the bolt. It's floating. No biggie. Some loctite will hold it all in place with no issues.
Final step. Align it and bolt it down.

Got the cables on. Got to give them some slack at the brake handle. Was a horrible time. The heat also don't help me. So much work to do and no time

Dug out the fe5 springs. Decided to put them side by side. The FE3 is def thicker and taller by a tiny bit. But maybe it's just me. Either ways I slapped on the fe5 springs. The bump stops were a huge pain in the butt to transfer over. Next to hunt for newer suspension. The old is really worn. Even the old set of shocks I had.

Weather wasn't brutal today. Decided to wrench on it after I got home. Got the 04 subframe off you can see the nasty FE3 stuff the 1 bolt clamp style front sway bar the 04 rad suppers yuck took off the arms have to desperate the knuckles keeping those surprising the ball joints are stiff good arms I'm guessing
Put the rear end back together. Threw on the fe5 shocks and slapped the wheels on. Bolted up fine and had anti seize on the bolts.
