Unhappy Big Problem

I was installing a stereo system in my car and was looking to mount the ground wire. Someone suggested mounting it under the rear seats. I start to put the screw in and what do you know? I hit the gas tank. So now my car is dripping fuel all over and my car reeks of gas. I am taking it to the shop today and am hoping that i can just seal the hole and not have to buy a new one. Does anyone know of an easy way to repair plastic fuel tanks. I did a google seach and came up with very little. Any help would be great.

I have to admit I have never done this before. First thing there is a grounding post right next to the battery in the trunk to save you some time. also they should be able the weld that right up but the smell is something that will take time, and lots of airing it out. Don't worry I am not going to say that you are stupid for not checking where you were drilling. although you should have checked before you drill always.

Good Luck.

I know that it was a stupid move but I didn't imagine a tank would be under the seat. Anyways the reason that I posted was to find out if i can repair it rather than replace it. I know how dumb i am so plase no posts like that.

Oh Noes! That really blows. I am pretty sure to be on the safe side, you will have to replace the tank.

Cool

I was not trying to be an ass. But anyways anyone with a tig welder can weld a patch right in there. Will not be hard and is a lot cheaper than getting a new one. I can't remember is the tank aluminum or what is it made out of. either way will be cheap to fix not hard don't worry.

I Know you weren't being an ass. I was just heading off the other posts that would follow. The tank is made of plastic so you can't just patch it like a metal tank. I was told you may be able to melt the hole closed. I will know something a little later.

I would agree here. Someone mentioned that they can weld the gas tank, but I seriously doubt that ANYONE would even attempt such. Aside from the gasoline in the tank that would have to be siphoned out, the fumes are highly flammable. It would take a long time before the fumes were actually dissipated enough to attempt to weld the gas tank.

Like Mercury says, replace the tank.

OK so i found a tank for like $175 but it is gonna take 2 days to get it in. Replacing the tank should be pretty easy, it is only like 6 bolts. I have a friend who is gonna do it for me and he is only charging me like 60 bucks labor to do it. I have the worst luck. 2200 miles and already a new windshield and new gas tank.

Like Mercury says, replace the tank.
They fill it with an inert substance when they weld gas tanks. Argon i believe. But then again what do it your self'er has argon.

as far as what the tank is filled with, we used to do it at home with just water. fill it with aqua, and weld away. life is good again.
