Question help

my son is in the Navy and currently in Norfolk right now. the last time he was home he tried to get his car inspected and it wouldn't pass. his car keeps throwing a code PO171. we took it to a couple of places to see if they could figure it out and nothing. since all of this has happened i have received a letter stating he will not be able to renew his registration in texas until it passes inspection. i'm pulling my hair out trying to help but i don't know where to turn. does anyone know anyone in Norfolk that can take a look at this car. he wants to come home in late sept / oct and he needs to get this fixed so he can register it.

any help will be greatly appreciated.

p0171 is a lean code it basically means the Fuel trims are so wack that its having to compensate usually 15% jsut to keep it 14.7 stoich. So either its a issue with the tune if it has mods or theres a vacuum leak, boost leak, 02 sensor issue, or ect!!

All I know is that it's a 2006 Cobalt SS coupe. Hope that helps. Thank you for your service.

O k... More then likely his fuel trims are off or what i said earlier..... Either his car needs to be correctly dialed by a technician or do a vacuum or boost leak test. If all works out have someone data log the car with hptuners and see if its within the cars parameters...

Best bet then I think is to either post in the VA regionals and either find someone there to look at it or see if anyone can recommend a shop that he could take it to

Too bad the car wasn't here. I know places that'll just sell you a sticker in Houston for $60 and have a friend or 2 in the DFW area who have connections up there. Nobody in VA though sorry.

but if youd like me to be helpful...there arent too many places around here that work on balts
DO NOT take it to a dealer theyre terribly expensive they charge like 100 bucks an hour for anything
everytime something happens on my car i usually figure it out or come on here ive learned so much from this site...and you cant tell me he doesnt have internet he should be searching this thing up and down

problem is if its registered in VA and he doesnt have it inspected he cant get it on base. but if he goes to pass and decal he can get a pass to get on base to go to the hobby shop and theres a lot of knowledgeable guys there who can help him out.

when you hear back from your son ask him if he's put a cold air intake on the vehicle. on cobalt ss/sc the aftermarket intake tubing is extremely prone to rubbing and causing a whole in the tubing which will cause this problem that he is having with his car.

after that it's a little more complicated to what it can be. but i would check that first as its the most common if he has the aftermarket intake
