help
my son is in the Navy and currently in Norfolk right now. the last time he was home he tried to get his car inspected and it wouldn't pass. his car keeps throwing a code PO171. we took it to a couple of places to see if they could figure it out and nothing. since all of this has happened i have received a letter stating he will not be able to renew his registration in texas until it passes inspection. i'm pulling my hair out trying to help but i don't know where to turn. does anyone know anyone in Norfolk that can take a look at this car. he wants to come home in late sept / oct and he needs to get this fixed so he can register it.
any help will be greatly appreciated.

p0171 is a lean code it basically means the Fuel trims are so wack that its having to compensate usually 15% jsut to keep it 14.7 stoich. So either its a issue with the tune if it has mods or theres a vacuum leak, boost leak, 02 sensor issue, or ect!!
time for him to grow up and be a man and figure it out on his own in my opinion
whose mom goes on a car forum for them? why isnt he trying to get help
this is probably someone looking to steal a navy dudes cobalt ss

and for your information this is not the first car forum i have joined...i'm a member of several of them.
O k... More then likely his fuel trims are off or what i said earlier..... Either his car needs to be correctly dialed by a technician or do a vacuum or boost leak test. If all works out have someone data log the car with hptuners and see if its within the cars parameters...
ya bro us Navy guys are out at sea alot dont be disrespecting us..
when i was on deployment my car was in my moms garage for 8 months and she drove it for me and got the oil changed and she even raced a C5 Vette and iced him haha
Mom's FTW!!

If u live near Austin I could take a look at it for u, if so pm send me a message, I have tuning equitment and can take some data logs and hopefully get it figured out for him before he returns home,

DO NOT take it to a dealer theyre terribly expensive they charge like 100 bucks an hour for anything
everytime something happens on my car i usually figure it out or come on here ive learned so much from this site...and you cant tell me he doesnt have internet he should be searching this thing up and down
problem is if its registered in VA and he doesnt have it inspected he cant get it on base. but if he goes to pass and decal he can get a pass to get on base to go to the hobby shop and theres a lot of knowledgeable guys there who can help him out.

when you hear back from your son ask him if he's put a cold air intake on the vehicle. on cobalt ss/sc the aftermarket intake tubing is extremely prone to rubbing and causing a whole in the tubing which will cause this problem that he is having with his car.
after that it's a little more complicated to what it can be. but i would check that first as its the most common if he has the aftermarket intake
