No air bags on this wreck.

Some of the DFW people already know I wrecked my car today. At 55-60 mph I rear ended someone and my air bags did not deploy. You tell me what is wrong with this picture.

air bag sensors are probably mounted lower and didn't receive any signal since the impact was soo high

You did not hit the airbag sensor directly. Same thing happened to me when I had my Matrix. I hit a deer doing 120km/h on the highway....but I hit above the airbag sensor and they never went off.

Glad to hear that nobody was hurt though.

hit a truck/suv?

That is one thing manufacturers don't consider... the majority of vehicles on the road today are SUVs with increased ground clearance... our little cars go right up under them. The airbag sensors are mounted near the impact bar behind the front bumper... from the looks of it your impact bar didn't get touched.

the sensors are mounted behind the metal bumper support. it takes a hard, direct, impact on the body structure to set those off. when you rear-end someone, you are likely standing on the brake at the moment of impact. it dips the nose lower than the normal bumper height.

airbags go off on force from sudden stops, not just because you hit the sensor...

yah the airbags are placed in such a way where unless you got the full bottom lip to top of hood impact you will never see them deploy. Side airbags.... different story.

Sudden stops?? So if I am on the highway and I end up rear ending someone and I do not have time to hit my brakes.....my airbags won't go off? I don't think so.

The airbags better not go off due to a sudden stop! They should only go off when you hit the sensors!!

You wrecked you car? How come it isn't sitting in my shop right now. Just giving you a hard time. Plano is a bit out of the way anyway. The airbags din't go off because the hit was too high. Had the impact been a little lower, then they would have deployed. Besides, you do not want them to deploy. They deploy at about 250mph and are close to 300 degrees. They typically break jaws, noses, wrists, and usually give 2nd or 3rd degree burns to anythign they come into contact with. At least you are okay though. You will be soar in the morning. Did you ever get your door fixed?

Not sudden brake stops , sudden stops as in a drastic halt of the car itself ....as in like 40 mph to 0 mph in the blink of an eye . You could be going 100 mph and hit the brakes as hard as u could and it would even come close to the force it would take to trigger the sensor Those air bag sensors(basic explanation) have ball encased in a very dense material . If the car changes speed drastically enuff to move that ball , bags pop . High hits like this typically do alot of damage with little speed because the part of thats getting hit is not not near as strong as hitting lower where the impact bar is . Most cars with high hits like this unless the impact is severe , the bags will not go off .

its the force from a wreck that pushes the sensors apart, its not when you hit sensors, the sensors are actually like magnet and when they seperate is when the bags go off, usually from sudden impact, not a 60-0 stop. so before jumping down my throat, research.

At the speed I was going I really dont see why they didnt go off no matter how high the impact was. Hitting something at 55-60 mph should set them off regaurdless.
