i think you should change it every 3 years i just read 50,000 miles

it really depends on the manufacturer's recommendations. However, a good interval that we used when I worked in a shop was every 3 years or 30k miles.

uninstall it, smack it around a couple of times to get the loose dirt out, wash it out with a hose, let it dry, recharge it, reinstall it. Lather, rinse, repeat. Should take you about 30min - 8 hours, depending on how many beer breaks you have in between each step.

it's not hard at all is what i'm getting at. Pop your hood open and unscrew the two bolts holding the filter housing and take the filter out.

If you have an aftermarket intake, it's even easier. There is a worm clamp holding the filter to the intake, in which you unscrew the clamp and slide the filter off. It's so easy I used to feel bad accepting rich people's money for doing this process to their m3's and audi's.
