you either have to make it comply with us crash regulations or show that another model is similar enough and has been crash tested. you have to pay 1.5x the cost of the car in taxes and get paperwork from the nhtsa and epa. you can get a show or display permit but it cannot be driven on roads and its only temporary and has to be sent back. if its over 25 years old you can do it pretty easily. they are trying to get it changed to 15 but its not happening. i looked into all of it when i was looking to buy an r33 from a guy in japan on a us military base awhile back. just read this

aussie cars you might get lucky on if a us car is based on it. but mostly only commodores are so unless thats what your picking holden HSV and ford AUS use country specific models.
