no 3rd brake light... illegal in NC?

i just bought a shaved CF trunk, and it has no spot for the 3rd brake light
should i not worry about it, or should i rig one in the rear window?
or i could make the red rings around the reverse lights brake lights...

any input would be helpful!
thanks

-Casey

I don't know about NC but in Missouri, all you need are stoping lights at the corners of the car and have to be visible from the rear. The 3rd brake light is just an added light for safety.

it might be that if the car came with it from the factory, you need it on there. so idk.

If the car came with one a properly working CHMSL is required by law.

errrrr. it bothers me when people post things like "its illegal" like its one big blanket statement. Its a state by state designation. the State of MD does not require a chmsl. it only requires the corner brake lights. many states will state that if a car was not produced with a safety equipment piece it does not require one (ex; side mirrors).
If you don't figure it out in the next couple days I could try and figure it out, but no gauruntees. Let me know. I'm pretty good with looking up traffic laws.

chmsl=center high mounted stop light

a friend of mine here in PA just got a cf trunk without the 3rd brake light hole. you wont get pulled over without it but if your car came with one you have to have one for inspection. so he just rigged one up in the rear window for inspection then took it back out after.

not sure about your state but thought id share incase yours is the same.

Um yeah I'm gonna say it's technically legal, but unless the guy doing inspection knows a cobalt has a 3rd brake light, you will be fine.

Why don't you keep your stocker for inspection.

A cop won't know that law.

i only know that because my bronco has a removable hard shell for the back. there is a CHMSL integrated into it after 1992, and Ford removed the literature on removing the top from the owners manual because it's technically illegal, because then you no longer have a CHMSL.
