Pictures from California Speedway (Fontana) Street Legal race on 7/12 & 7/19 *no 56k*

I've been meaning to get these posted up but had a really busy week. I had a great time over the course of the last couple track days and got something like 50+ runs in on the new Cobalt. It was also good to meet a few new people. I'm a pretty big track junky so chances are that if there's racing within a couple hundred mile radius of SoCal I'll be there in something.

With that said, here's the first batch from the July 12th event. It was really hazy, overcast, and harsh lighting during mid-day so the quality may not be the best.

Pictures from the pit area on July 19th. I got there pretty late and wasn't able to catch anyone during their final runs. Also saw another blue SS heading out of the facility and not sure if they were racing. That and the "somewhat quick" built red Cobalt did a couple runs while I was staging and I couldn't get any pics.

Cobra H/E

Need to find me an OPTION B tank so I can get rolling w/ my dual pass.

I ran a 14.4 at 100 mph. 2.2 60'

temps were hot as usual, 1200', and track prep is poor.

was a fun day over all

The brand new silver '08 is mine and is bone stock. Was running 14.30's the first time with 2.3's and 14.40's the second track day with slightly worse sixty-foot times, both days at 101 traps. The heat was into the 90's both days and the surface wasn't the best but I won't complain about getting a lot of practice in on the new car (32 runs one day and 25 on the second).

Nice clean pics man! Thanks for posting them.

I have a neighbor that has the same Honda in the 2nd and 3rd pic who came up to me face to face and swears up and down he could straight up beat me in a race. I told him to go put his Honda back in his garage, hang up the keys and save your gas and the embarassment. Turns out he knew absolutely nothing about MY car, let alone the stock version.

Any posted times?? Oh, never mind. I see now.
Anyone go up against the G8??

BTW, silver turbo looks sweet!!!

Thanks. For being a big coupe or family sedan, a lot of these newer cars like the Camry and Accords are downright quick compared to many cars just a few years ago. I want to say that was a six-speed V6 car and was running high 14's (14.8??) at 92. Of course not all tracks are going to be the same so don't compare those numbers to track times of SS's and other cars at other tracks across the country, but I'd suspect a race with a bone stock supercharged SS would come down to the driver. If you have some mild modifications and can launch the car your shouldn't have too many problems if the Accord is stock (especially if it's a slushbox car).

ty daniel

Nuggets in the G8 ran a 13.8 in the morning at 102 with a 2.06 60'.

through out the rest of the day when it heated up, he was trapping 100 mph, and 14.2-14.4, depending on his 60'.

Gotta love Fontana...

13 sec cars... become 14 second cars... HEADACHE.. OY...

I think I saw one of his last passes in the day and he ran a 14.3 at 100 but it was starting to get even hotter by then. Earlier in the morning wasn't too bad and I think it was "only" in the mid-80's and felt a lot better, but by later in the afternoon it was up in the lower 90's and still really muggy. I wrote down a bunch of the times various other cars were running and for the conditions he wasn't doing too bad.

I never been to any other 1/4 mile, but it was pretty bad... lol

To hot to run a 2.7 w/ minimal cooling mods. So much potential, unfortunately wasn't able to be unlocked.

The California Speedway is not a bad track, although front wheel drive traction sucks. Rear wheel drives hook nicely, at least mine do. I ran 13.795 @ 102.78mph on the GMPP stage 3 and drag radials. I spun the drag radials in 1st gear and 2nd gear, when the nitous kicked in, too much torque in the low end. Without spraying I got a 14.456 @ 99.78mph. When is the next street legal, in November 1st & 2nd right? I need to break lower times and get more traction mods. I should be able to nail a low 13 (I Hope) with proper traction.

November 1st and 2nd are the next two street legal days at california speedway.

13.7 is good, but your mods. Any where else outside california that would of been a low 13, especially on nitrous. how hot was it when you ran your 13.7?

Roelss, keep in touch on here or gme site about the next event. November would be a great time to go.

It's not so much that Fontana is bad, per se, but it can vary quite a bit from event to event. If they don't do any real track prep like what happens at most of the street legals there's usually problems with traction. People doing burnouts on street tires which chunks up a lot of rubber on the track and they don't sweep it down often. Combined with a lot of people and going through the water box on street tires and dragging water out onto the track, no VHT, etc. and it can be hard to get decent traction. Add some wind and a good dust coating to the mix and it doesn't help much. Also being that it's the summer months and they don't have lights up at the new track so no night runs means contending with middle of the day heat.

Just to get an idea of what a difference conditions and prep can make, back before they moved the track and when I was racing a lot more often I went to a nice private rental on a cool fall evening. The temps were getting into the 40's so traction was starting to become a little bit of an issue on slicks as the track cooled back down but I was still cutting 1.9-2.0's on my skinny slicks on my SRT-4 and was consistently running 12.90's at 107-108. Went up to LACR a week later with the exact same configuration and no changes to the car for a big national event and was running 13.40's @ 104-105, which is almost exactly what my SRT-4 was doing at Fontana a couple months back at the street legals. It's an extremely consistent car but the last few street legal events have been reminding me a lot like the conditions that were common up at Palmdale before they shut it down.

I'm hoping when they get the lights installed or later this fall conditions will improve and some better times can be had. My guess is the new Cobalt will pick up a couple mph on the top end and if I can catch a good day might cut a high 13 (which according to my slips is very possible if I can shave a couple tenths off the 2.3-2.4 60-foots).

By the way, for anyone looking at Fontana's web site they still have an old schedule you can download that's from a couple months ago and shows the August street legal dates. The main web page took it down and someone I know called and verified it was canceled. I try to keep an eye on it and I'll post up if they have a cancellation of another event and sneak in another street legal before November. Waiting nearly three months to race sucks.

It was not that hot, it was the day of the LA Invasion GM shootout I think it was like mid 80'sF. You know what really sucks, is that it was my 3rd run of back to backs runs. The car was operating on 210F. If the engine was nice and cool, it would have been nicer. But I need to figure a better traction mod. having over 300TQ on tap isn't easy to control.

I'll keep in touch with you guys. Up on the GME forums my screen name is RoelSS.
Later!
