Big Calipers - Cobalt, Redline

BIG BRAKES, BIG CALIPERS

I've seen what's out there in kit form (calipers, different sized rotors, vendor-only pads, etc.) and they cost a lot of money -- depending on the system (Baer or SSBC). I've been looking just for a caliper replacement with more pistons, more swept area, and NOT floating calipers. These should fit the SS without any problems, I know they'll fit on a Saturn Ion Redline (I own a Redline).

If you don't know what floating calipers are -- it's what we have up front with our single piston caliper. A floating caliper only has a piston on one side so it only really pushes against one side of the rotor (when I replaced my first set of pads I was really surprised to see only the inside pad and the inside of the rotor consummed - the piston side). NON-floating calipers, like about all of the high performance systems, are fixed in place and have multiple pistons (at least two) pushing against both sides of the rotor at the same time.

I think I've found a possible replacement for our front calipers -- Outlaw Competition Calipers.

Outlaw 2000 Features•
Billet Aluminum housing design (Superior in strength to cast calipers).
• Four Bolt, multi-ribbed housing. (Increases rigidity and reduces deflection for improved pedal feel).
• Stainless steel pistons. (Retards heat transfer to brake fluid).
• Differential sized piston bores. (Eliminates excessive pad taper).
• High temperature, square cut piston seals. (Controls piston retraction for zero drag).
• Internal crossover brake fluid passage. (Eliminates potential crossover tube damage from debris).
• Standard 5.25" mounting pattern.

Specifications
Housing Material -- Billet Aluminum
Disc Diameter -- 9.00" - 13.00" (228,6 - 330,2 mm)
Mounting Centers 5.25" (133,4 mm)
Pad Type - PFC 752, Hawk HB 100
Note: Hawk has a full range of pads in size HB100

Inlet Threads -1/8" NPT Pad Area - 6.63 sq/in. (42,8 sq/cm.)
No. Pistons - Four Pad Thickness -.50" (12,7 mm)
Piston Material - Stainless Steel Weight - 3.0 lbs
Disc Thickness - .38", .81", 1.00", 1.25"
(9,7 - 20,6 - 25,4 - 31,8 mm)

We have 1.00" rotors, I measured yesterday and I measured the mounting for our calipers and it's 5.25" - it might be a fit -- hm-m-m-m.

Part Number RH/LH Bore Size Disc Width
170-3546 LH 1.38"/1.38" (35,1 - 53,1 mm) 1.00" (25,4 mm)
170-3547 RH 1.38"/1.38" (35,1 - 53,1 mm) 1.00" (25,4 mm)
170-3586 LH 1.75"/1.62" (44,5 - 41,2 mm) 1.00" (25,4 mm)
170-3587 RH 1.75"/1.62" (44,5 - 41,2 mm) 1.00" (25,4 mm)

You can buy these in a kit consisting a pair of the 4-piston Calipers in black or red, a pair of Hawk HPS or HP_Plus pads (you choose), and the brackets to mount everything for $595. Here's the website for Outlaw Disk Brakes -- http://www.outlawdiscbrakes.com/calipers.html and here the vendor's website -- that sells the package -- http://www.ddmworks.com/sky/brakes/4...n_caliper.html

It says it's for the Sky and the Solstice, but I've already spoken with both Outlaw and DDM and with the Ion Redline guy whose car was the test system (and he was there with a Cobalt SS) and everything fits. Not a bad price to get really high performance brakes! For those who don't have the new Brembos, this will work well.

I have asked for a discount buy if anyone's interested (see the email from the company next) -- you could pm me if you're interested. But I don't want to wait too long, I'm planning to use these brakes racing in mid-May.

Scott,

This is what we can do for the sets -
1-4 sets - $595
5-9 sets - $545
10-14 sets - $520

If you get over 14 sets, just let me know and we will see how much more we can take off. As for the differential sizes, if the car is mostly street driven there is no need for it, but if the group buy would like it we would be happy to make the order with differential sizes, just let us know.

Talk with you soon,
Dave

Thanks in advance, Scott
