Brakes, basic service or upgrade?

I do pretty much all city driving on my 2.2 and I've put nearly 28,000 miles on her. My brakes are starting to get shitty. I had to slam on the brakes a few weeks ago and they made a really bad grinding noise. Stopping has a "pulsating" feel to it and theres is slight squealing noise sometimes.

Should I upgrade the front brakes? Is it hard to put on new rotors? (my car is 5x110 FYI if you want to make suggestions)

Or

Just get some new pads and have the stockers checked up on by a brake specialist? (pretty much go to Midas or something)

Also how do I do a basic maintenance service on the rear drums?

Decisions decisions.....

The pulsating is a sign that your rotors are warping... very common with stock rotors.

I upgraded to EBC Sport Rotors and EBC Green stuff pads and the car honestly stops on a dime. I was really impressed on the firmness of the pedal and they are pretty quiet.

The one thing I am disappointed about is when I put them on I fixed a stripped wheel stud and screwed up the ABS sensor on the driver side, so the first few stops the ABS rattles then turns off. Once off, the car stops like a dream come true.

How much did the EBC's cost you and how hard was the install?

Install is simple. Just remove the wheels and the 2 caliper bolts. Compress the piston in the caliber, insert pads and re-install. Compress piston back and your done.

I paid $224 shipped from Autoanything.com

Interesting, if I can upgrade the front discs for under 200 I'll probably just do that.

Check on eBay. I would street clear of Drilled rotors though. At least those that are excessively drilled, they have a tendecy to crack under hard braking.

i would avoid ebay brakes, but talk to a few vendors or get new stock brakes. when i upgrade my brakes all i am going to do (until other wise needed) is get stainless steel lines and new pads. I have a friend who auto-x with that kid of set up and he has never had a problem.

My suggestion is to get two sets of whatever you end up getting, cause I need some brakes too.

I have had StopTech rotors with Hawk HPS pads installed for a week, it's a very nice combination.

Would it be worth buying a set of Brembo rotors? I want the same brakes as on the 08 Balt.

i got a question on this though.. i was told that drilled and/or slotted rotors A) wear out your pads faster and B) are worse because if they warp you cant get them resurfaced... any insight on this? i just heard it, didnt know what was up with it though

I'm in the same boat...at least for rotors...mine a warping a lil and the pads are eating thru the rotors...harder compound on the pad I guess....I talked to a couple of techs at work and they said that you can resurface slotted rotors...not sure about X-drilled...Not sure what pads are on mine(bought it used)..but the rotors aren't worth turning....I'd like the 08 brake setup too...I'm leaning towrds the power/hawk combo also

Yeah, I don't think you can get them resurfaced. But they shouldn't warp like the stock ones. They also provide better braking and look great!
