Help with Brake Upgrades!

I am looking to get new brakes, and can't decide which kit to go with. I am looking at either converting to the SS/TC Brembos, Wilwood kit, or Baer kit. I am upgrading the front bigger, and just upgraded discs and pads in the rear. All with SS lines and Royal purple fluid. I was wondering which Front brake kit would be best? Has anyone used the wilwood or baer kits? Just looking for any advise. Thanks!

hey man seriously...

brembo blanks, SS braided lines, Hawk HPS pads...that will be enough to lock the tires at which point you will need stickier tires b/c your brakes are overpowering...

ss/tc brakes are good but you would have to change ur rims to the tc ones or pick up aftermarkets bc of the offset, my vote is baer, used them on another car build and they looked sexy

I would say that willwood kit might be something to look at that i think TCE has. You can't run 16 in the winters anymore but those are super sweet!

i would say stainless lines, hawk pads, and drilled/slotted/or both rotors that should be enough unless u have money to spend

As far as being a true known quantity, being able to get parts, being designed for our cars, being designed to be daily driven and validated as such the Brembo setup is impossible to beat. They come with Ferodo HP1000 pads, which in case you didnt know, are one the best and most aggressive pads on the market for street use. This pad is also original equiptement on Ferrari, Maserati and others......

Next would be the Baer setup, its a quality product and is very street friendly, pretty much the same life expectancy as the Brembos. You have to use Baers rotors though.

The CA wilwood kit Ive never seen and dont know what calipers or discs they are including, these are both important things. Wilwood makes race brakes, they arent designed for extended use on the streets, they will require more maintenance(this could include replacing calipers every few years, they are cheap though which is a plus, but add the cost of a new set of calipers in 3 years to the cost of the kit) Theres also more pieces to wear and work loose if improperly installed. youll probably have the same or WORSE clearance issues as with the Brembos.

As was pointed out, unless you are just looking for BIG brakes and not trying for a certain performance level, you cant go wrong high quality blanks(or slots) from Brembo or DBA, some grippy pads(Hawk HP+ if youre serious about stopping) and braided stainless coated hoses will completely transform youre braking and will be than you could use on the street. If youve got an issue with the fact that HP+ say they wear rotors or are noisy, then you need to change your train of thought, buy some caliper paint and decals and stop trying to build a racecar when thats not what you want.

Its okay, I can really get mad at Qwik

Its also not like it was my idea, or something even new, Ill just be probably the first street Cobalt to have them, and the only LS.

Theres one or two other things that are getting done that arent top secret but ARE my idea and NO ONE has done it to my knowledge.

Like what? pm me if you have to. And yes, you'll be the first LS, and probably the first cobalt to run the floating rotors, but i am close on your tail bucko.

If you're considering the use of 16s I'll be glad to make you a deal on one of the smaller 12.2" kits. Clearly you won't fit a 13" kit in those but for a daily driver and a modest budget in mind I'm confident you'd find this kit both superior to stock and a helluva value compared to just doing oe replacement parts.

Plus 1: The 12.2" kit. $798 (n/a HHR and Cobalt)
This all new kit uses time proven components to produce a low cost yet effective Big Brake Kit for for any enthusiast. Based on lighter and less costly parts the Plus 1 kit will provide improved braking performance as well as enhance both acceleration and appearance. We combined the popular Forged Dynalite caliper with quality two piece hats and rotors for a final product that weighs far less than oem parts yet provided added efficiency with true four pot calipers for true race bred responsiveness and results. Produced currently for the n/a HHR only. Fits 16" and larger wheels!

* Wilwood FBDL four pot calipers
* Steel mounting brackets
* Wilwood 12.2" x .81" UL-HP rotors
* Wilwood Billet aluminum rotor hats
* Choice of BP10 pads
* TCE spec stainless steel hose kit
* Wilwood 570 Brake Fluid (2)
* Optional Wilwood GT directional cast rotors- ADD $100
* Optional RED powder coat finish- ADD $100
* Optional cross drilled Wilwood SRP rotors- ADD $100

for less than 998 (to get red and the good rotors) i could setup the brakes to be stronger than most people on here could use...BBK are appearance modifications for 98% of people....im not bashing that price or your company and if the OP wants the appearance aspect then thats what he should have said, but unless he is doing hard brake on top of hard brake on top of hard brake he wont notice much difference between this kit and what i and maven and qwik have suggested...even then it would probably be minimal...

i will reitterate your braking distance is a function of your tires...

I just wanted to state this for the benefit of anyone who wants to order a TCE kit, YOU MUST specify youve got a Cobalt and not an HHR, and insist that you need appropriatley smaller sized calipers, the HHR kit when used on the Balt will give a very long pedal with little feedback, different calipers must be used on the Cobalt.

Yeah let me know if I may be able to assist you in any way!!

but as mentioned before you may be overpowering the grip portion of your car's tires. You can get amazing results with much more simpler parts.

so let me know if you need any assistance!!!

I did exactly what your looking to do. I'm very happy with the looks and the performance.
Look in my gallery for the shots of the kit. TB
