Lowering

Hey guys, so i've read a few threads about guys lowering there cars on here with just springs. I want to lower my cobalt a few inches to even it out sort of thing instead of having the back up a bit. But i want to know what do i need to lower my car? Whats the best option? If i just got lowering springs, would that do what i need it to do? If i have to replace the struts, shocks, springs etc... or whatever i wouldn't want to spend that much. Any help would be greats, thanks a lot everyone!

what model do you have? SS? the '08-up SS suspension can handle just springs but if you have anything else you may want to upgrade your shocks/struts.

you could do just springs but eventually the struts will blow...

So much bad information, my 2.2 struts havent failed yet and I have the lowest drop available from springs(aside from cutting them), same with JN2 and Preston. I know there are quite a few more but I dont remember them offhand, check the spring pics thread in this section, most people have had no problems.

not necessarily bad info. there's alot of factors that go into it. . . your driving style, the condition of the roads in your area. . . etc.

I am a complete ******* when I drive and I love hard turns. I have fully compressed the shock quite a few times, the only reason it hasnt blown is because I didnt cut the bumpstops like most spring manufacturers tell you to do. Only hits them in hard cornering anyways

I have cut springs w/ factory struts... i have an 08 2.2L coupe... I live in the mountains of VA & my struts are still fine. I drive the car every day 45min both ways (you can tell where im from, i measure distance by time, lol) I know prolly the struts will bust if im hard on it... but i plan to bag it anyway... haha, whatever you do, good luck! Lowering is always a good thing!!!!!

I only have springs, and i havent had an alignment yet to get my struts slotted. Im a pretty hard driver at times too, and Im doing fine so far...although i do plan on getting the alignment, and upgrade my shocks and struts.

How did you cut your rears? They are barrel springs(skinny on each end, wide in the middle)

get a set of springs, eibach sportlines, HHR, Tenzo's, whatever, and throw them on and your good to go. It will create more stress on your shocks but as long as you dont cut your bumpstops you should get plenty of milage out of them with no problems.

QFT

When you cut the bumpstops, you allow the strut to bottom out internally, piston meets end of tube hard, bad things happen - like all the oil in the strut puking out or the rod bending

The bumpstops keep the hard parts inside from meeting in a catastrophic way and will extend your strut life.

Ive got sportlines on my sedan lt (36000 miles). I wasnt happy at all with the ride. To bouncy for my taste. I swapped in used low mile SS/TC STRUTS AND SHOCKS and now it rides as it should. I DID cut the bump stops in the rear....but not the fronts.

bump stops are already on the car, find the how to in spring install and u'll see why they say to cut it, I've been running tenzo's for 20k on stock struts and shocks, I go to crappy roads daily, bad bumpy, and if I go fast enough over some of it I get some air time

No clue.... My friend does all my cuttin for me, he picked my car up while i was @ work. So I'm not sure what's goin on back there. He told me a little about it, but i've never seen them so i dont know exactly what was done. The front needs put down a little lower so I'll make sure I'm there this time so I can know what's goin on, hahaha.

So if you dont cut the bump stops... struts/shocks last longer?

Now whats the negative effect of not cutting bump stops...

Little less suspension travel, thats about it.

Much easier on the whole car to bottom onto the bump stops.

i would cut the stops, it would help you not bottom out, and have that slamming feeling when u go thru some rough hills
