HPtuners dyno?

just another of my weird think out loud ideas.....

just hear me out before you rip on me,

Our cars can monitor their tq output, this we know.
Interceptor gauges even have a way to display a HP reading obviously they are using the calculation to find the number from an outputted signal of engine tq....

so.....(assuming major errors aside here, will discuss this after)
What is to stop a person, having a parameter while logging, that shows hp (or tq if you like)

sure, the actual number might not be right, but hell, what dyno is truely "right" anyway
its the CHANGE in number thats important right?

and being able to see an outputted HP curve right beside your rpm log,
could be very handy during tuning/modding to see smaller changes than our butt dyno can detect.

(this is assuming the output parameter for tq, is "somewhat" accurate, if anyone can comment with authority on this, please do)

its not going to be a dyno replacement by any stretch, but if its there, and its free, why not use it?
like i said, just thinkin out loud.
thoughts anyone?

there is a way, it was discussed on the hptuner forum also...I'm not sure how accurate it is.

that would be cool as hell so when your tuning the timing you could see at what point you stop making more power. would save a ton of money on dyno time.

thanks doc. when i get off work in the morning ill tinker around with it and see what i can find.

one reason i considered it worth looking into, is i remember checking my interceptor HP reading before and after my GMPP catback install, and it rose about 14hp (crank obviously)

my thoughts exactly!
as long as its somewhat accurate on the engine tq, it could be a very handy tool

what you could do is a 3rd gear pull from 3000 to 7000rpm on the highway and then plot mph Vs. Time and see where the gains are. thats what I do.

I had this working on my silverado along with a MPG pid but never backed up my configs before my laptop was stolen. http://www.hptuners.com/forum/showth...horsepower+pid - Link to HP Tuners thread I got the info for my silverado's config.

I never tried to get the HP pid to work on my redline but I couldn't get the MPG one to work when I had tried. The LS1 pcm had some paramaters the redline does not support so I ran into a wall there and never tried to get the HP working. I'd really like to get both working but the HP one would be very useful when fine tuning my meth injection. When my new HPT cable shows up I'll have to give it a try again.

There's a lot of variables that can throw a pretty significant change with this idea and I don't know how sensitive to small HP or TQ changes.

i just went through the pid list and i couldn't find the tq pid he is using, the only torque pid i have access to is under transmission>traction control

That may have been the problem I ran into when I gave up on it. I'm thinking maybe something based off of MPH and RPM but i don't think it will be very accurate as it will be dependent on gear, incline, etc. I'll have to wait till I get HPT again so I can see what PID's are available in the scanner.
