I have been working on this with several people at EFILive, a company that can rewrite PCMs & BCMs, and proper pinouts, it isnt nearly as easy as people have assumed here but it definitely appears to be doable, Once I am done I will do a complete How To and walkthrough of the process.
Disclaimer: It appears that anyone wanting to do this will need to be able to tow their vehicle to the dealership for various computers to be flashed to operating systems that all work together. |
Would someone with a tech 2 be capable of flashing the necessary ECU's or only with dealer VIS/SI access?
|
Someone with a Tech II should be able to do the flash as long as they can flash the BCM to match with the PCM, i.e. flash a 2.4 OS and matching info onto all devices, do a key learn, turn off or program the Vehicle Anti Theft, then once everything works together, use the Tech II to alter the VIN back to the vehicle VIN or spend $100 for HPT credits and not worry about it.
E38 pcm is another option, it has a newer OS and can handle larger injectors: Injector Flow limits with the early E67's (7.9999 g/sec), you need to find a suitable 2008 or later OS with a 15.9998 g/sec limit Cost at this point: E67/E38 PCM - $150 on ebay Wiring Harness - $150 on ebay BCM solution - $0-150 depending on Tech II access Tuning - $100 VIN unlock on HP Tuners Custom OS - $100+ from HPT depending on which OS you get from them, some of these include added costs like 3 bar MAP sensors will also need: reluctor wheel reclock matching crank position sensor (LSJ sensor will not work, it is analog and the newer PCMs use a digital sensor) Camshaft position sensor (still working on this solution as most of the e67/e38 options use VVT and the sensor is built in on most of them, so we dont have an option, but as soon as I can get a good look at several of the different cars, I should be able to find a way for it to work on an LSJ) Looking @ $500-1000 initial cost depending on resources |
At that cost, why not just run a dang cable throttle and an aem or ms3...
|
because with an AEM or ms3 you cannot run your BCM and again lose all funtionality of your car being a car. If I were building a full blown drag car, I wouldnt bother with this stuff, but I still want to be able to run the car as a car.
I also wanted to be realistic for everyone that is interested in doing this to their car. It wont be easy, and if you get an AEM I would suggest one of the plug and play options for the LSx engines that use Drive by wire, and jumper all the proper connections over |
