2.2 vs 98 3.8 camaro

So this buddy of mine at work seems very sure of his camaro which has intake and exhaust... My 2.2 has intake, SS mani, and a 2.5" straight pipe. Both of us have 5spd and are experienced drivers.. just wondering who you all think would win the 1/4 mile..

probably be a drivers race... no huge advantage either way. the 3.8 make quite a bit more power but the maro is also maybe 3300 lbs. (rough estimate). go to the track and post a vid... no sense in bench racing.

They aren't fast relative to a S2 SS/SC, but they're faster, stock vs. stock, than a 2.2.

Of course, not a TON faster, and this guy's modded, so I'm not suggesting that the Camaro will inherently win, but they aren't THAT slow.

It's probably a driver's race. I'd definitely like to see who wins tho.

Look at it this way. My 2001 Cavalier Z24 absolutly stomps 2.2 Cobalts and was a drivers race for a SS 2.4 Cobalt.

A race between my Z24 and klugsrt-4's 2000 3.8 Firebird was dead even from a dig or roll untill my 108mph speed limiter.

haha That was some bad ass racing!!!! haha Took awhile haha but fun!

and it really depends on the gearing too. Some v6 firebirds had like 2. something gears and they are the slowest of the v6 firebirds. I had the automatic with the 3.42s i think.

The Y87 3800 Firebird and Camaro had the V8 suspension, steering, 4 wheel disc and different rear gear ratio. The Y87 had 3.42's and 3.23 vs base 3800 3.08 gears.

I love F-Bodies and dislike SRT-4's but even I would grin and bear owning a SRT-4 over a 3800 F-Body.

IMO the '98 up V6 F-bodies are not as slow as some folks think they are,mid to low 15s maybe???? I used to work with a guy that had a '99 Camaro V6 auto and at the time I had a '98 Mustang GT 5 speed[a very slow car by V8 standards] and I could beat him,but it was pretty close, had he had a 5 speed he might have gotten me.From a dig he probably has you,I wouldn't think it would be a hard car to launch.

I used to have a 94 v6 camaro...slowest thing I have ever owned! And I've owned some POS cars...that thing couldn't even manage a burnout in the gravel, no lie....there was a damn tired engine in it too though.

Still don't understand why GM didn't drop the Supercharged 3800 in the base camaro from 98-02. Would have been AWESOME

i ran him as we were leaving work friday night, went from a ~15mph roll as we had just turned left. I had my rear bumper at his front by the end of 2nd gear when i let off. Oh and i bounced my rev limiter shifting from 1st to 2nd and at the top of 2nd because i was so shocked i was actually beating him. I'd like to see how well i do from a dig... hopefully i'll have vid next time, couldn't get my phone's camera to start up fast enough. He was cool about it though, he called me later and said it made him want to go trade his camaro in for a cobalt SS.

Sorry but if I drove a Cobalt that lacked SS anything I wouldn't be insulting a Camaro no matter if it's a V6 or not.
