Thumbs up 2.4LSS versus Mercury Cougar..

Soo I get off work early and am heading north on the main drag, (gaetz Ave). The temp is -10c and traction is bad at intersections!! So I'm comming through the centre of town, cars all perty etc, running great. Then this Mercury cat, burgandy all nice and clean drives by at a good clip.. Traffic is light but the lights at the interesctions are not set up for all out green down the straight as they ussually are. I catch up to him and cruize by, no intention on racing!!!

Next thing he blows by me, now I'm like screw this , we get to another interesction and he pulls in behind me, I know were going to go but he's behind me.. Light turns green, no traction and I'm pulling towards the curb.. He gets into the next lane on my left and pulls away, (I'm guessing either some traction control or winter tires??). Then my baby hits some good road and traction is made, I catch up but he didn't get far fast anyways .. Were going up hill, 4 lanes all to ourselves and I leave him, It was nice and easy, the car was being shifted at maybe 5000rpm and felt like it wasn't even trying! We hit the next set of lights and he's in the turning lane and I give him a thumbs up .. The car looked like the higher end Cougar and sounded like he had a muffler mod.. I myself was on stock tires.. It was fun and worth the gas,lol..N/A all the way

A few years back one of my buddies bought a new Cougar V6 and was very pissed when a 1991 Cavalier Z24 kept handing him his ass.

Quite funny really since the Cougar would seem to have the advantage on paper.

Cool.

Ya I think the Cobalt is really underrated as a quik little car.. I put up a little thread how a guy in Dodge 2500 and I were going at it and he even said he was surprised with these cars.. Of course it always comes down to the guy/girl behind the wheel.. I'm pleasently surprised buy these cars, and I've even had an S/C owner wonder if I was driving an S/C cause hey was impressed by the SSN/A.. I know even the 2.2L's seem pretty quik! Me likey my Cobalt

my friend has one a 1999 v6 5speed. its a quick little car and it drives really nice. we beat out an 03 hundyi santa fe V6 by about 2 cars from a dead stop. with me driveing when she drove we lost by a car. i tought her how to drive after that lol. then i raced her in my ss/sc a buncha times. dead stop i killed her 10-15 cars. 40 roll 8-10 cars to 100. the only one that was close was a 20 roll when i started in 2nd gear. we were dead even untill about 35mph when she had to shift to 3rd by then i was into the power of my car and put another 10 cars on her lol. anyway sorry for the thread jack nice kill it would probly be a good race for a 2.2 balt

My god have any of you driven previous GM FWD cars?

My 2001 Cavalier Z24 will run neck and neck with a 5-Speed SS 2.4, the 2.4 TC is a peppy engine with power well before the variable timed 2.4 SS.

i have a buddy that has one. We went out to sears point about a year or so ago and you should have seen the look on his face when he got the time slips... I felt so bad, but then again it also was his first time at the track. That all being said, it is a fun little car even if it isnt all that fast. I had to borrow it a couple times while my car was in the shop.

Good kill, Keep up the good work for GM

If i remember he got a very low 16 and a high 15. I think he got upset because I beat him in my land yacht... But it wasnt my first time to the track with the car so i had an advantage.

You do know that the fastest Cougar ever was still slower than a SS/SC right.

The old Eliminator, XR-7 V8 & Turbo were all 15 second cars. The Thunderbird Turbo Coupe with M5 was the fastest Thunderbird and it ran a 14.9

As for the new Cougars they are also slow the V6 is hindered by poor gearing and even worse shift strategies.

Yeah - as a former Cougar owner, like a bit more than a month ago, I can guarantee you the SS n/a is much quicker. About the only advantage the Cougar has is in it's suspension. I had an 01 V6 and I never even bothered to race it.. it looked nice and road very well, but just wasn't particuarly quick.

And whoever was talking about the XR-7, for the NE Cougars, the XR-7 was just an appearance package, all cougars either had a 2.0 I4 or a 2.5 V6, they had plans for a 3.0 V6 with AWD, but never made it.. with that said a lot of Cougar guys have put 3.0s into their cars and THOSE are fairly fast.

my dad had a v8 cougar xr-7 i think it was a 5.0 i'm pretty sure it was faster than my ss s/c. i could be mistaken, because it was the first car i drove with any real pep to it though.

The 5.0 XR-7 was a mid-high 15 second car with an awesome driver.
