They both do 0-60 in 6 seconds flat, and they both run the quarter mile in about 14.5 at 98MPH. As far as handling goes, I believe the RX-8 has the advantage there.
So in a race, whether from a dig or a roll, it should be damn close. If the RX-8 driver can get a good launch, he will take the Cobalt off the line, but once the RPM's get into the midrange, the Cobalt has a huge advantage. So they would be about even until the RX-8 gets into the high RPM's, where it would pull away. Next shift, and the Cobalt reels it in, and once again they are dead even
It could go on for a while lol, but the RX-8 would probably win in terms of top speed.
From a dig or roll though, its a drivers race

The Rx8 would have a advantage on a road coarse (50/50 weight distribution), but straight line its got more power, but also more weight, Cobalt has more torque, but the R is RWD and has a 6 speed, also has a higher gear ratio I believe (4.10s) and a 9K redline....Cobalt has the SC torque though and less weight...
Good race though....

Its would be a drivers race for sure... From a dig it would be all about the launch... Ive only had my ss for 800 miles... but it seems to me to be a car of momentum ... If you can get going hard it will stay going hard !

In a straight line I think you guys would be able to take them out.

I was driving my friends Z24 cavilier and had one fly up on my butt, I got over...and then got on his butt, he took off, but i wasn't impressed with how slow he was pulling away, personally, I think you would rape one.

Keep in mind the auto tranny Rx8 is much much slower than the standard tranny.

Auto is only rated around 200 and manual around 240. The engines are different. The one mated to the manual has 3 intake ports per rotor where the auto only has 2.

Actually properly geared automatic transmissions shift faster then standards, they also handle power a lot better too... Because it is consistent an automatic has the advantage of nailing a shift point exactly the same every time where as in a standard, that’s a bit hard to do. That’s why most drag machines use 3 or 4 speed automatic transmissions.
Example: Phase5 used the 4t65e transmission

heres the estimations.....
Horsepower : 197 hp @ 7200 rpm(auto), 238 hp @ 8500 rpm(manual)
Torque : 164 lb-ft @ 5000 rpm(auto), 159 lb-ft @ 5500 rpm(manual)
Redline : 7500 rpm(auto), 9000 rpm(manual)

Im not saying its slower because its an auto, its slower because they use a different engine in the auto tranny version, which as said above has fewer intake ports per rotor, and thus makes less horespower than the one in the manual tranny. Had the engines been the same then I imagine it would be a closer race, but as it said the Manual has a power advantage.
The auto has reliability and consistancy that is useful, but the Manual will always, ALWAYS put down more HP to the ground as its a direct linkage to the engine, and it gives you much better and precise control over the engine.
