Cobalt vs ION

Ok i was on the redline forums, and there was someone who said that the ION Redline's where a hair faster than the Cobalt SC/SS stock for stock. He said that the ION weighs less. Doesnt the Cobalt weigh less!? I thought that the cobalt's where a hair faster stock for stock. The ION has 4 doors if you count the 2 suicide doors!

I also found this, its got 0-60 times for stock cars. Look at the Cobalt SS and then look at the Redline. Both are actually a little under rated IMO.

I don't know i this is exactly fair, but look at my signature and there is a link to my car vs. an 04 Ion RL with a custom intake and custom 3" Magna flow exhaust. The RL (Korax123) had a passenger (the camera woman, Korax123's wife). I won, and I'm bone stock performance wise. (Just installed a custom lower grill tonight, my first mod, check it out in the "How To" section)

EDIT: Although we think that he was shifting a little too early.

My SS weighed in 3010lbs w/ me in it on an empty tank w/ no weight reduction other than unnecessary personal items (coke bottles, user manuals etc.). Not sure if anyone in an RL has weighed theirs.

they are dead even, been proven...

also some cars are considered a factory freak, dont ask me why, but a RL around here is quicker stock than a modded one, both stout drivers.....

I made a post over there about Cobalt being faster then the Redline and pretty much got chewed out. I didnt do it mean or anything, but the one thing you gotta remember is this.

On the Redline forums Redlines are faster

On the Cobalt forums the Cobalts are faster

Plain and simple. They like to argue that we have bigger heavier wheels/rims, and that they have plastic body where as we ahve a metal body. Yes we have 2 doors and they have 4, but our 2 doors are the HUGE. I dont know about weight but I would say they are close to even IMO. I dont know what makes the redline weigh so much.

My brother has a 04 Redline with Intake header and exaust. he can barely beat me. I have just exaust (until tomorrow when my intake gets installed ) usually we will run neck and neck till third he will pull about half a car we shift into 4th ill make up that half a car and he will slightly start pulling again.

when he had intake and exaust only I beat him rather easily (I have just exaust).

So that cars are very close to one another. the people who said "driver race" are the ones you want to listen to, anyone else is a Nub.

I think the 06 SS's have more HP and TQ then 05's tho. So an 06 vs an 04 RL is unfair, 05 vs 04 RL and thats the dead even IMO.

from what i have seen, the SS/SC is always faster stock for stock, i havent ever seen the SS/SC lose actually... im sure if you asked a RL that has really raced a SS a couple different ways, they would tell you that they SS was faster, although im not sure why it is. other areas of the country might be different though. and you have to remember that everyone is protective of their cars...

If you guys think one is faster than the other its all in your heads. Same cars. Driver mod is what makes one faster than the other stock for stock.

actually, when i race a RL on the highway from about 70mph, just one gear, i win everytime. i have discussed this with the RL owner a couple times now. just pushing the gas down when already in the gear has nothing to do with the skill of the driver, so clearly there is something about the SS that is different. doesnt it have a better transmission or something?

and.. the 06 redline is supposed to be the last year for it. they didn't sell enough of them appearently.

it's a good car, but saturn hasn't really built a reputation for sporty type cars. and even though it's the same car as ours, because it has the saturn logo on it, they will never sell alot. it'll be the same situation with the saturn sky, i think. there will probably be quadruple the # of solstices sold compared to sky's

Nope, same transmission. When it comes to a race it should be close to even. The weight difference is minimal and will vary depending on the equipment in each car. The Redline does weigh more (I think it's 130 lbs) because of the quad coupe thing, but if you've got a RL without a sunroof and an SS with then you've eliminated that weight difference right there.

Had different gearing. I can atest for that for th 04's or some of them cause I know a kid and his shift points are different than mine. But not all of them are like that. Thats why I don't think that mines-better should judge all redlines off the one he's raced in his lifetime. But I've had this kind of argument with him before.

yeah i bet that the weight of an ion is w/out a sunroof?? I bet if it had a sunroof, i think they would weight the same. Thanks for the info. What i didnt know about the Redlines untill the other day is that theirs cars dont have sunroofs, boost gages, or the spoiler or the sound system pack. They are all options that you have to pay for. You dont get the boost gage unless you buy the performance package. A lot of the saturn owners brag about how their cars start off $1000 less than ours, but if you look after you add the sunroof, spoiler, sound system pack, it ends up being the same price. Our cars come with all of this stock. I havent seen a ss/sc without a sunroof. plus our rims are bigger and look better IMO. And its a Chevy, so im happy with my choice.

Also im not trying to bash the redline's i was just on the redline forum and saw that they were saying they were a hair faster stock for stock. I like the redlines There is a guy who owns one near where i live and its silver with the chrome wheels and the spoiler option, and i think the sunroof option too. It looks good. Its one of the only ones i have liked. Are those chrome wheels a factory option? I thought they came with grey wheels?

Darksun... i dont remember ever talking to you before... but as for my ONE race, i have raced and '06 redline as well, and won. also been to the track with 2 others and watched both of them have trouble breaking 9.7 in the 1/8. im not ******* on the redline, i like them a lot, im just sayin what i have seen from my experience, and my experience shows me that the redline is a hair slower. never claimed to be totally correct. "it might be different in other states though" please dont try to belittle me with your comments, im not trying to act like a jerk here...

From my experience with my brother Redlines have traction problems. Its wierd.

My brother has an 04 Redline I have an 06 SS/SC. We both have the same tires (Perelli Nero MS's all seasons)

From a Roll I dominate him really bad. he cant touch me unless I mess up. I have an LSD he doesnt so I dont know if this is why. In my car I will chirp first and spin a little, I will usually chip going into 2nd but from there I have firm grip.

My brother will spin out all of 1st and most of second. Even when I drive his car I cant grab the ground in it. We have even done it with 3 200 lb people in the car and he still has trouble gripping.

Ive seen him floor second and his speedo will hit 80 in second gear then drop back down to the real speed.

From a roll we are pretty much dead even, We havent really raced since I had my intake put in but when I had just exaust and he had I/H/E I ran neck and neck from a roll. Shifting was the only thing and sometimes he would pull with a shift and sometimes I would. I cant wait to race him now that I have an Intake.

P.S. If you do a search on these forums you will find the video's of us racing.

my best friend/roommate has a redline. i'll race him tonight and see whats up

the cobalt is lighter but the heavier wheels kill it so the redline supposedly edges us out
