Me vs GTI mkV! Driver Mod needed.
I can't beat my buddy's GTI
Why you might ask, well his DSG and low torque launch is hard for an inexperienced racer like myself.
I am not a good racer I've decided. He has 260 WHP and I have probably 320 WHP, I weigh less and I am on Stock Conti's and he's on all season Kuhmo's
We pull up to a stop light and we decided to go for it. I floor it at 2k RPM and I break loose and spin, traction control comes on and slows my wheels down to get grip and we go... He is like 2 cars in front of me.
We get to another light and I decide to use launch control. Rev to 5k and release the clutch (maybe a little too fast) and well spin spin spin. He's in front and I have to play catch up.
How do I get my power to the road without breaking loose. I lost but not because my car is slower, it's because I need a driver mod.
I feel like if I release the clutch slower he'd be a head anyway so I feel like I have to give it a lot of power up front.
Don't know what to do...

Feathering the throttle goes a long way in regaining traction.
I personally have my low rpms in 1st and 2nd gear slightly de-tuned to keep the wheel spin to a minimum while still being able to get moving quickly.

Yeah I've been just flooring it the moment it gets green. Rolling races are easy but races at a stop, I struggle for some reason. I'm gonna practice today somewhere deserted.

Yea don't do that. It takes a little finesse. You gotta kinda be quick but also slow with it. In a front wheel drive the weight transfer is horrible. Practice a few times starting at 2000rpm, this will most likely bog the motor, and then building up. On the stock Contis you aren't going to be able to launch more than about 3000 without spinning.

Flooring any FWD car with 200whp+ off the line is just going to spin. Go out and practice, practice, practice.
DO NOT FLOOR IT IN FIRST GEAR!
Just pedal through first carefully, and floor it once you're in second. DO NOT NLS TO SECOND!
With a little practice you'll whoop your friends ass all day.

Cool thanks guys, I went out and did a couple launches and I can tell for me this is gonna take a little. During pressure I guess i panic and floor it, but when I'm practicing it works out pretty well. So I'll get it. Thanks for the advice.

Well I'm trifecta tuned and I have the boost down to 5psi in first and I use the factory launch control and I love it... not to much power to spin the tires.... just enough to spin and kinda grab at the same time. I can hold my own in a dig race with a lot of cars so that's y I asked lol

Oh ok. Well I'm not sure of your mods but I am not exactly stock anymore. I wouldn't even stand a chance in first if I had 5lbs of boost. With the stock 15psi seletion tune on I don't spin too bad, but with the HP/Trifecta selection on death star mode I don't get traction til like i dunno 60mph.

God you suck at driving.
This is precisely why there is always someone out on other car forums who insists they can beat us, because they've beaten someone who can't drive, like you. If you can't drive, don't give us a bad name.
Sorry man, it had to be said.

Agreed.. Help each other out instead of ******* on others. I get tired when someone will just bash on the other. All the while they wont help and are thinking, " if i help him, he might become better than me and then ill look like he does now." Just a thought i usually have.

hahaha sorry dude, i didn't mean to be rude. it certainly comes across that way on this page.
but keep your head up dude, practice makes perfect. Avoid launch control, and taper the throttle.
Good luck!

Practice, practice, practice.... It will go a long way in learning your car. As it was already stated feathering the throttle is going to be the most effective way to regain traction. Its a learned art as you instinctively want to just push the pedal through the floor especially if the other driver is out ahead a little.
It actually took me quite some time to learn to launch my current Z28 on street tires. My old T76 front mount camaro i ran around on ET streets but with this car its on 19" wheels and they wont hook anywhere under 3rd gear(sometimes not even then). It just takes a little bit of learning to understand your cars abilities from a launch.

Feather, damn you! Feather! You have to have a light touch on the throttle. it's not all about mashing to the floor. Try this next time you are next to him:
When you let off the clutch, only go about halfway, (I.E. until you can feel it trying to grab), use about 1/4 to 1/2 throttle until you get it to move. Once the car is rolling, I'm talking 1-2mph, let the clutch grab. Stay at 1/2- 3/4 throttle until you know you have grip, then floor it. Second gear, pop the clutch but only 3/4 throttle until the tires bite, then mash it.
It's not perfect, but you should win.

I agree with everyone so far so I'll just post one more to reiterate the point.
I don't launch very often but I've found that 2500rpm or slightly below to be best with all the nannies off. Even ESC if you just want MAX take off. Example the other day I took off from 30 and even with TC off the ESC kicked on (which just applies the brakes to certain wheels) 'cause the wheel was pointing in the "wrong" direction.
Anyway, as for myself, I prefer to let the clutch out all the way, quickly, but not dumping it and then feather the throttle. At least for me it's easier to "feel" what's going on with the car and the tires.
But like they've already stated... Just practice using some of the tips given here and you'll get it.
