Exclamation Mustangs, 3000 GT's, Cobra's and Trans- ams OH MY !!!!!

So I gave into peer pressure tonight. My nephew and I went out to Telegraph and Joy road and stopped in at the 50 s MC Donalds. For those of you that don't know this is the local spot where all the muscle cars and pimped out rides meet. Looks like a ****** car show. We drive around for a while and first fun of the night a Mitsubishi 3000 GT and a 2000 Mustang Cobra. So I pull in the third lane and I already know that the cobra is going to be out like trout by the sound of it but who cares. We all gun it and get from 15 - 75 mph and traffic gets in front. At that point however I was a car and a half of the 3000 GT and very slightly behind the cobra. Can my car take a 2000 worked up beautiful cobra ? So next light it is just me and the cobra. He allows me to go from 20 mph and we go and all the way to the very very top of third it was close..... and then not anywhere close after that he handed me my ass. It continued to generate a **** load of power. So move on to 20 mins later and I see the same Cobra and a totally race n ready 74 trans am. These two take off from a dead stop to what appeared to be 100 + and it was neck and neck. I say appeared to be because I wasn't about to go that speed .. ( Not yet ) At that point I realized the cobra gave it a lot of power when we ran but not all he had. So on to a race from a dig. ( This was a very exciting night indeed ) An 18-20 yr old kid with a 2002 mustang GT ( I asked ) and his girlfriend pull to the light. He revved a couple times as did I and we take off. No wheel hop through 1st ( I got rid of that ) A very slight spin in 2nd. We were neck and neck and in second he was a 1/4 panel ahead and im thinking **** so I squeeze every available RPM out in 2nd and **** to third where I pull ahead we go to about 95 and I was slightly more than a half car ahead. We get to the next light him and his girlfriend were cool they both give thumbs up and were like your cobalt is no ****** joke. So now I am feeling top of the world. I make one more long pass down Telegraph and ooopps someone told the boys we were street racing because they were posted up everywhere. I stop there head home and post about it. Sorry for the bible I wrote but it was just one of those nights where your car is running amazingly and everything lines up.

They actually didn't make any 00 Cobra's except for the limited number of Cobra R's. It was probably a 99' or 01' Cobra. They had some issues from the factory (people were dynoing less than the adv. performance numbers) and Ford put a recall out famously called "the fix" which bumped up power to the advertised numbers. While bone stock they aren't too incredibly impressive it doesn't take much at all to wake them up big-time. In fact, throwing 4.10's or even 4.30's in the pre-03 Cobra's turns them into a whole different animal.

good runs, be safe out there.

Ok I thought the 2000 year was the cobra with the SC. I was taking a guess on that one because I knew that the 99 was sans SC. So probably a 2003 ? That thing was a beast !

Nice sig change BTW. As for being safe I hear ya. It is stupid to street race and anything can happen. I really don't do it hardly ever but you can be hurt your first time. I just try to get the other guy to wait for a perfect oppurtunity. Like a light where the next light is also empty. Generally other guys want to go regardless of the traffic situation so hence I never race. Last night though all 3 guys waited for a clear road but traffic still impedded the first run as you can see in the story. The GT run was completely clear road.

wasnt 99 the only year they had that problem and thats why there was no 00' Cobra, they were busy fixing the 99's? Something with the new tumble port head design?

did you notice any identifying body parts? 03/04s had a heat extractor hood, ducktail wing, and much different bumper than the 99/01s. It also has this neat little whining sound coming from under the hood

Glad you had fun, as Tofu said be careful.

well i heard the whine.... He also had the fog lamp slot and the air induction slot. When it comes to that body style of mustang unless I ask I can't tell. That's why I asked the kid in the 02. I was already confused by the cobra.

Nice races....

Like you said, if it was really a supercharged Cobra (03-04), then he DEFINATELY wasn't giving it all he had... or he totally sucked at driving. My friend's bone stock '03 Cobra trapped 113mph.

But anyway, sounds like some good races.

Speaking of Muscle Cars, etc in Detroit, my dad and I will be driving the Bullitt up from Florida to Detroit in August for the Dream Cruise. Maybe we'll run into each other on the street.

03 Cobra, taken yesterday at a local car club cruise. That 98 Cobra in the background was gorgeous. Paint was immaculate, and it had a Vortech under the hood.

Yeah he was sandbagging. It was definately a supercharge cobra now that I look at that pic helty posted. I knew he was messing around when him and that trans-am ran because both of those cars left my ass in the dust as I was trying to keep up to see the race.

I was really impressed that I took a newer Mustang GT. I am wondering If I can take the 05's ? I would imagine an Auto might be a good race but a stick would probably get me. I really feel like I have become one with my car. I know that sounds nerdy but I rarely even have to look at my rpm guage to know when my rev limit is about to hit.

I will shoot you a pm. If it is nice this weekend I am going out there with my video camera. I feel so lucky living around here when it comes to car events. This is the only city ( Detroit ) that I know of where all the old school muscle car guys and the tuner guys hang out and get along. Sure the v-8 guys give you crap but when you do good they are the first to give you respect. Some kid dubbed me the mustang killer and I just laughed and said well stock to very slightly modded mustangs anyhow.

Most Magazines tested that the Automatic 2005 Mustang GT was slightly (hundredths of a second) faster than than the 5spd in the 1/4 mile. Just thought Id let ya know.

Barely behind an 03/04 Cobra in a drag race? Only if they can't drive at all maybe or they weren't racing. It had to be a NA Cobra.
