are they any advantages of going to a 17inch rim and lowering or can it even be done and what width is the widest a tire can go under the supercharged cobalt

Depending on the rim it might be lighter. If the diameter is smaller it will also technically change your final gear ratio allowing you to accelerate a little faster. Your speedo will be slightly off.

I am running 16" 5 spoke steelies from a Malibu on 215/55/16. Dropped on H and R Race Springs for the last week. I now need to buy a low profile jack and drive it up on a piece of inch thick wood.

i'm lowered 3" and on 17s. It doesn't look all that low. Mine weigh 17lbs so there is some weight loss over stock. With 235/40 tires my speedo is off by about 3mph
