Daily driving ET Streets

Well, I've been back and forth between ordering a set of 4 Michelin Pilot Super Sports or just daily driving on some Mickey Thompson ET Streets. Couldn't find any threads on anyone trying to DD on these things on a Cobalt, but I know plenty have done it on Camaros, Mustangs, etc... I'm going to use this thread to review how well they work on the street on a somewhat daily basis, as well as keep track of how many miles I'm getting out of them.

The goal is to have a nice sticky tire for one or two trips to the track, as well as for all the car meets this summer, but at the same time squeeze 6-8k miles out of them. If they last all summer, I'll probably just buy a new set every summer. If they dud and only get me 2k miles, I'll try some other tire next year. Hope these things don't disappoint.

Should be fine as long as you rotate. Curious as to why super sports instead of direzzas or...?

Direzza's were an option too, but they were like the NT-01's for me. They are great for autoX, but aren't specifically great in straight line grip over the PSS's, and don't seem to last as long tread wise as a DD. At least from what I've been reading. I don't think I'd have been satisfied with any of those tires without at least trying to DD the M/T's, since these are hands down the best tire for straight line grip that are also drivable on the street.

MT's are not going to corner for ****, and if your sig isn't updated you should work on your tune if your having straight line acceleration issues. Get some nt05's. They have been rather good for me. On a sunny summer day I can get them to hook pretty decent at 500 hp

It'll be driving 90% in a straight line. Either on a strip, on a 55mph highway(to work), or down in Ocean City, MD(a straight road). As for the tune, its been the spin at the top of second that made me want stickier tires. I don't want less power from 4.5k-6k in the tune, I want more grip.

Unless you're on slicks, you're most likely going to spin in 2nd so the biggest thing there is driver mod. Honestly, if you're just full bolt ons/stock turbo I think you can get away with nt05's like cmiller suggested.

Although, I am curious to see how dding on the mt IIs turns out because I don't know what tire I'm going to run with my build :

I don't plan on being stock turbo past this summer. Looking to ****** up a ZFR at some point next fall/winter. That played a role in me wanting to see how these do on a daily basis.

No sense in getting them now if your going to switch next year. I Bet they last only about 5000 miles on our cars. But anyway you have your mind made up so go ahead and get them. I will be on the MT's but I will be at 600 whp lol.

They're already on their way. lol. And that's what I want to know. I want to know how long I can expect them to last. Assuming these don't last as long as desired, would you suggest the NT-05's or the NT-01's?

Nt-05s did me wonders on stock turbo and fully bolted. Managed multiple 2.0 60fts at the track with them. On the zfr, that's a different story though...

My nt05's have 8-9000 on them and have about 4/32 left. So 2/32 to the bars.

cmiller what pressure r u running your nt05s at
i had mine at 30 psi all last summer i got 6-7k miles on them
there at 3/32nds i debating on buying another set or like u going to the michelins or
direzza z2s the nitto do hook when the streets are hot are at least when there spinning u can hear/feel them trying to hook haha
i love when ever now an then when 2nd just hooks for a slit second and it almost snaps ur neck

but at the end of summer like late sept into october they got real greasy i wasnt happy with pushing them in corners any more was it the same for u in the fall? im just wonder if its how these tires act when the temps drop of it the tires were worn out

also i was running them 245-40-18 on a msr045 18x8 wheel

I kinda think MTs are a bit overkill for DDing still on the stock turbo. Curious to see the results you have with them though.

I actually just put them on yesterday. Went down my local secluded back road, hit the launch control(set to around 3k), and had just a hint of spin and I was off. These things make the car fun.

I have had a change of plans though. Hoping to grab Shortbus' stock wheels and get a set of PSS or RE-11's for the autox I'm trying out this summer. Obviously they are better daily driver tires then these monsters, but I will be using these when I'm down in Ocean City.

^ yeah thats scary. didi that once, it was as low ride home.

the only other thing you will probably notice is the car wants to grab every grove and rut in the roads. Just be sure to have a handle on the steering wheel at all times. My hoosiers were prety aggressive when it came to that.

I am speaking from rwd 400+ hp cars, but I ran a set of nitto extreme drags, and had no issues in the rain. Same car, a few different changes, and I switched to these.

Mickey Thompson 305/35/19 Et Street Radial Tire - LatemodelRestoration.com

I had the ride of my life sliding from lane to lane sideways in a rain storm. I was running no faster then 30 mph and had no control. The old school slicks like this were even worse. I ran these for a while.

Mickey Thompson ET Mustang Drag Slick 26 x 10-15 3053 (79-14) - Free Shipping

Personally I would not DD anything other then a sticky street tire. FYI a little info for OP running a DR or Slick on the street is not good for track use, if that is your bag. They will not hook like if they are drag or mexico racing only. All of the oils on the roads really do a number on them. They do not hook like they should.

I haven't driven the car since coming home from getting them mounted up. I'll be heading out to a meet today about 30 miles out and there will probably be some messing around on the way home, then Sunday I'll be heading to the local track(again about 30 miles out) and getting some passes in as long as it's warm enough to run. Kinda worried they're going to cancel with the weather supposed to be just under 50.

Any suggestions for burnout at the track? Should I go around the water box and just light them up for a second or two? I know that a big burnout is kind of stupid for these tires, but i'm unsure on going through the water box. Also, I plan to start PSI up higher around 30psi, and I'll go down from there. Launch control is set around 3k, and I can always play with that while I'm there as well.

Well, did a good bit of driving yesterday. Had a rematch with a CTS-V that I ran back on my baseline 21psi tune and crap tires. Pulled him from a 40 motor for motor. Pulled him from a dig motor for motor. Lost when he got pissed off and hit nitrous on the second 40. lol...

It's a shame these things don't last longer, because they really do hook. Sitting at just over 100 miles put on them so far, and so long as the track is open, I'm hoping to get in at least 4 passes. Come on 12's!!!

Just a little update, I've put a little over 500 hard miles on them and 5 passes at the track. With the new toy I picked up, I'm not sure how much more the Cobalt will get driven before I get another set of wheels for my new Conti's to DD on. I got caught up in some rain the other day. Considering the horror stories I was given, driving them wasn't really that bad. I maintained speed limits and never felt nervous. Aside from the treadwear, I've found no reason not to want to daily these. I dead hook from 1st launching at about 3500rpm. Nothing like beating V8 rwd guys off the line on the street.

One downside I should add is that when I had the old Conti's on the car, I had zero slip from the clutch. These tires with a bolted and tuned car will make the stock clutch slip. I only got in 5 passes at the track from NLSing 1-2 and getting major slipping during. Car threw some misfire codes and I called it a day.
