powdercoat..

how much is it to powdercoat stock ss/sc rims black?

ChriSS/SC 12-11-2009 02:03 AM

BIG variation in price depending on where you live and where you go to do it. Could be 50 bucks a rim could be 150 a rim.

I paid 100.

HB_SS/TC 12-11-2009 02:04 AM

I paid $95 a rim to have mine powder coated

Killa702 12-11-2009 02:05 AM

dam, lil bit more money and you could jus buy brand new rims

HB_SS/TC 12-11-2009 02:06 AM

not really the rims I want are $900 a piece

Killa702 12-11-2009 02:07 AM

lol wth, a piece or the whole set? id like to see those rims

ericgt79 12-11-2009 02:07 AM

a place in my area told me 79 a rim for mine

Rissa 12-11-2009 02:10 AM

$85 a piece for mine. $500 flat to have them dismount, sand blast, powdercoat, remount and rebalance the tires for you.

CordiaDOHC 12-11-2009 02:40 AM

crap 500? lol the MSR's are right there at that price! And something a bit nicer isnt far off!

ChriSS/SC 12-11-2009 05:17 AM

She's talkin 500 with everything (labor and such) included. The labor and extra costs of new wheels is usually in the 200 dollar range (on top of the price of the wheels).. MSRs would end up costing you around 700(ish) by your logic..

ericgt79 12-11-2009 06:23 AM

over priced cali ftl

Yeah, I heard in Iraq people sandblast for free since it's so abundant. lol

recklessnova 12-11-2009 10:24 AM

I powder coat I am not in your area however
Its a hobby for me so I do not have shop rental or anything like that.
At most it would take two pounds of powder to do a set of wheels. Powder is around 12 to 15 bucks a pound. as you can see the powder isnt that high cost but The prep If done properly Is what takes the most time and time is money. My stripper can strip powder from a wheel in 10 to 15 min blasting would take around 20 to 30 min per wheel to get them nice and clean. If its only one coat of say black you can coat and cure in about 30 min per wheel. I charge 50 a wheel for most stuff unless you want stuff taped off like a lip its extra because it takes more time and the tape isnt cheap. alum also does this thing called outgassing when heated anything traped in the alum will come to the surface and ruin the finish with a pin hole. They have primers for this to help and also the wheels can be heated without powder on them to help also. for 50 a wheel your not getting primer but you will get outgassing at most places. If you want them to be super nice ask your powder about clear coat thats the hot ticket I think as if they get scratched you can wet sand and buff out like paint. Make sure whoever you use you ask them what they do for prep I have seen and herd of shops doing half ass prep work and it can look ok for a while and then you start having problems with the finish.
FWIW

I think he means having a stock tire broken down, sandblasted, then re mounted and balanced

QFT, i usually charge 350-375 for 4 rims powder coated and cleared, customer pays extra for the remount/balance

Billy Baldone 12-13-2009 04:59 PM

I found a guy with a speed shop who also powdercoats and sanblasts to, remove tires, sandblast rims, powdercoat rims, remove front Brembos, powdercoat Brembos, remount tires, reatatch Brembos all for 450. Yes I am going to him for my poedercoating needs.

recklessnova 12-13-2009 07:04 PM

Thats a good deal if its good work for sure. take atleast a hour to do the brembos with having to take them apart blasting and coating them with a 20 min bake thats fast workin.
