"powdercoating" troubles
"powdercoating" troubles
So I got some "new" tires Saturday, and was getting them mounted and the dude came out and asked me to go and look at my wheels I was like "umm...all right..." I told them they were powdercoated and to be a lil gentle with them. Well the drivers side front wheel was chipped horribly, that thing was mangled. And I know that powdercoating shouldn't chip, especially like that. You could see the old finish underneath, clear coat and everything!!!

The others didn't look so bad, they were more careful. The guys at the tire place told me they either painted them, and lied to me and said they were powdercoated, or the more probable answer, they powdercoated over the old stuff. I was pretty upset, so I left them a nice message asking for my money back. I don't want a car with nice new tires, and shitty looking wheels that look like I painted them myself. They weren't open this weekend but when I turned my phone on this morning and they left me a message saying they would fix them, including chemical stripping(which they never offered me in the first place. I assumed they would do it right the first time, but apparently they had 2 powdercoating options, powdercoating over the original which is what I got it turns out, or having them stripped) free of charge. I didn't even have to go in there and yell at them!! So I'm taking the car in next Monday, and it'll be done Thursday or Friday. Now my question is, should I get them gloss black like they were before, or a more semi-gloss/flat black?

this is how is supposed to be done. it looks like they just powdercoated over the old finish without even scuffing it down. powdercoat will go over paint and look good, until it gets scratched then it will flack like this. it needs to be at the very leasted scuffed so it sticks better. as for gloss options id say gloss.
Thanks guys! Yeah they're gonna strip them down to the bare metal and re-do them, he said they are no longer offering the option of powdercoating over the original finish because of this lol. Even after this I'd still recommend them, the owner is a nice guy and apologized, and I like that you can bring your car to them and they dismount, remount and rebalance your tires too. Yeah still debating on gloss, or semi-gloss.
when I saw the title I thought you were going to bring up a problem I've seen on another forum.
An S2000 owner had his factory wheels powdercoated. He used them during an auto-x event and the spokes had cracked and were on the verge of breaking off completely at the hub.
Apparently, the baking part of the powdercoating process had structurally weakend his wheels. It hasn't been determined if it was the shop he took them to used an improper heat setting or if it's just the powdercoating process itself. Could just be the added stress, no one knows at this point.
Just thought I'd throw this out for discussion since the tc wheels are thin spoked like the s2k wheels are.

and I knew this was coming
Eh the other places were like $75, not too much more really. One place said they'd do them for $25 per wheel I was like eh...no thanks. But I'm getting them done for free so I can't complain.

That guy must have just gotten a shitty job or those wheels are bad quality I dunno.
