Ppl with stock painted wheels...

I am looking to paint my stock wheels using the Duplicolor Wheelcoating. I had good luck with it on my motorcycle wheels.

Anyway i was wondering when it comes to prep work...i know i need to sand everything...but after washing, sanding, tack cloth...do i need to primer them? or can i just shoot the paint ontop of the OEM paint?

Thanks in advance!

Curious as well, but i think you would still primer the wheel

I primered my wheel then use black caliper spray paint as its very think and spreads very evenly. Then lots of clear. Looks amazing and shines nice. No chips as its chip resistent.

put note cards between tire and rim = no over spray on tire.

Etch Primer is to help paint adhere to bare metals and primer filler is used to help fill any sand scratches and smooth the surface. Since your going to be spray bombing, most spray bombs stick to metal pretty well. And Paint sticks to scuffed up paint just fine, so spray bomb will stick just fine to scuffed up paint on the wheels. What I would do OP is to just grab a can of etch primer from the store. Put a real light coat on it, it has acid in it to make it bond and etch into the metal. Then just spray your color over that. This is just incase you sand through spots of paint and go down to bare metal anywhere on the rim. That should hold up and let it stick just great. Sand the rims with 400 grit or finer. But primer wont make the black really pop more, since black hides extremely well. Spray bombing generally all hides extremely well since it isnt atomized well and just globs out. If you were using a real gun with a color like red, it would make a difference

I used high heat spray paint, cost me like $12. I didn't sand, just used a scuff pad. Mine have been done since July with no issues. Check 'em out in my images.

i did mine last summer sanded it down getting finer and finer idk what i started and ended with. 3 coats of primer, then 5 coats of paint lightly wet sanding between each coat. they came out really nice and held up for just under a year with no chips but when i got new tired put on the edge if the rims got messed up. but i cant really complain bc i only spent about 20$ and about 8 hrs and it looks great

scuffing will work just fine since your not really trying to remove texture, just trying to adhere paint. and you dont need to sand between coats of primer. thats actually pretty pointless no offense. spray 3 coats about 5 minutes apart or untill the last coat has no gloss or wetness look to it. your supposed to sand your last coat after it has cured. Usually after about 2 hours. with spray bomb probobly like 45 minutes. Thats why i recommend just shotting a thin coat of etch prime, then apply paint

i wouldn't recommend anthing but wheel coating or possibly caliper spray paint( good idea). i used regular black spraypaint and used a full can on each rim. they scratch so easily its not even funny. gonna redo them soon

Hey thanks for all the info guys! I started yesterday. Here is the process i used to do mine and so far ( i only got two wheels completely done) it looks amazing.

1. wash with degreaser--then dry
2. sand with 320 grit paper
3. wash again, then dry
4. tack cloth, then prep wipe
5. two light coats of black sandable primer
6. 1 light coat of gloss black Duplicolor Engine paint or Caliper paint
7. then 2 medium coats of same paints
8. 1 light coat of Duplicolor Wheel Coating Clear
9. 1 medium coat of same clear
10. 1 heavy coat of same clear (make sure to wait for it to dry or you'll get paint runs!!!)

Everything is perfect but that. Spray the 1st coat of clear the way you want your last coat to look. Never leave clear dry and grainy. Just a tip for the future.

Gestapo...as long as you spray the 2nd and 3rd coat within a few minutes of eachother...works out perfectly. They all came out like glass. ill post up pics tomorrow!
