Prove my friend wrong...

Hey everyone. I need some help. I know I need to get some winter times/rims, since I have a SS/SC. Where I am during the winter gets about 40 inches of snow a year. My parents are totally awesome, and are going to buy them for me for 'Christmas' a few months early. Awesome.

Except a friend of mine (Who drives a pickup...) is trying to convince them I don't need them. My parents like him, and will listen to what he says unless I can prove otherwise.

He claims that since Pirelli is Italian, and that Italy has the Alps and snow, all Pirelli tires can handle driving in snow fine. : He also says that the people who say the stock tires can't handle snow just don't know how to drive.

So if I can just get a few of you to post that you need to get different snow tires, and where you live, that would be awesome. And if you want to say what snow tires you have now, that would be cool since I'm looking for some to buy, and really have no idea what to get.

you're friend is an idiot. if you value your car, you're life, adn the lives of others, get winter tires. the stock pireli's are SUMMRER ONLY tires. they absolutely blow in the winter.

tell your friend to learn what he/she is talking about. the alps and mountains has zero to do with the tires

tell your parents that they are HIGH PERFORMANCE SUMMER TIRES ONLY.

and if you drive on them, they better have a good insurance policy, and make sure you have up to date health insurance

I have 16X6.5 steelies with 205/60/16 goodyear Nordics

btw
ferrari is made in italy too. does that mean ferraris are good in the snow too?

notice under the winter section, light snow, deep snow, and ice.
they are all N/A

which is what your car will be if you drive in snow on them.

GET WINTER TIRES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't stress that enough!!! When I had my LS last December and we got one heck of a snowfall, I had to go pick up my b/f who has an ss/sc with Pirelli tires since he got stuck on a hill. He now has BF Goodrich tires that grip like no other so that he can get around in the snow/ice this year. We live in Missouri, by the way.

Your friend has obviously never been to Italy. I lived near Pisa for 2 years, and they NEVER get snow other then maybe a dusting. Just because those tires "may" have been made in Italy, does not mean that they are meant for handling well in the snow.

These are summer performance tires and NOT all season.

Here are the specs for the Pirelli P-Zero Rosso's which are on the SS/SC's. They are catigorized as MAX SUMMER PERFORMANCE. Please do not drive on these tire in the snow! Tell your friend to get a set of P-Zero Rosso's and drive around on them, he will see real quick how much you need snow tires.

I got 16 inch steelies and Mastercraft Glacier Grip II's. http://www.mastercrafttires.com/us/e...assenger+Tires

I drive better in a skirt... yes, I'm a girl.
Maybe he means that you can't drive because you're a girl? Sorry, just kidding, I couldn't resist.

Seriously, though, another reason to get cheapie steel wheels and winter tires is to keep all that nasty corrosive salt of your alloy rims. That's the main reason I bought mine.

Or get a beater car just for winter.

The stock Pirelli's (and any other performance summer tire) not only don't do well in the snow, but they don't do well in the cold period. Once tempuratures drop to around 32 F the tires become completely rigid, which means no traction and flat spots until the tires warm up. When driving in the snow the tires don't have a chance to ever warm up, so therefore you never get any traction.

Show them the page on the OEM tires on TireRack, it says right in the review/rating/explaination that they are NOT ACCEPTIBLE for winter driving.

Your friend is an idiot and prolly rides the shortbus. Pretty much common sense to know tires like that DO NOT go well with winter. And.. What everyone else said.

just gotta say, i drove all last winter with the stock summer tires here in canada and i dont recommend it. slid sideways into a curb doing less than 5... on a straight road, thats how bad the traction is. needless to say i'm buying winters this year. you're just asking for trouble with the stock tires. keep in mind, all it takes is for the person braking in front of you to have better tires than you, and you're done.
