Ok, I was driving the other day, and popped a tire for no reason what so ever, it punctured the side wall and the tire is completlty ruined. I'm thinking about getting so BFG G-Force tires instead. Should I get the g-forces instead of another pirelli and if so how much is a set of 4 g-forces? Also if I do get new tires is anyone interested in 3 pirellis with 4000 miles on them (still look like new)?

Best place there is for tires.

I would suggest calling them, talking to a tech, and going over your driving style and habits. They can suggest the best tire for ya. I ended up going with the BFG Traction T/A's and they have been GREAT!!

 

how much were they?

 

for a 205-55-16 they were $85 each.

 

225/40/18 are $190 each...about the same price as the stock tires. Didn't see the stock size available, though.

 

the cheapest tire I can find in a 215-45-18 is a Kumho ECSTA SPT for $108

I saw that, too...that must be new, because tirerack didn't have that tire in the stock size a month ago when I checked...I'm happy, those are highly rated tires from the consumer's point of view. Sure, you lose a little grip, but they're cheap and long-lasting.

 

I as surprised at just how expensive tires are for you SC guys... There is actually a tire for $311 !!! Guys with corvettes dont pay that much !!!

Blown 4-banger, I think it would be cheaper to just buy a replacement tire instead of 4 new ones.

Beg to differ. If you are seriously buying a Z rated tire, not just a ZR (W or X) you are going to pay a LOT of money. Your tires will cost WAY more than your rims.

Beg to differ here - There are 3 speed ratings within the ZR range [W,Y, (Y)]. An X rated tire does not exist. The only thing a Z shows is that the tire can support speeds above 149mph with proper inflation. The Cobalt SS has an OEM W rated tire. It is ok to match or to go higher than the OEM rating but you will see even fater treadwear and a tire capable of speeds above 189mph not to mention it is pretty unnecessary on our vehicles. Although most tires in this size are expensive a W rated BF Goodrich tire is $125 for our size which is defined as a ZR rated tire that has the same capability as a "Z rated" tire. I would not say that is WAY more than rims.

A "ZR" tire does NOT have the same capability as a true Z rated tire. Yes the Z rated tire will wear faster and cost more, but if you honestly are planning on driving this car above ~140 MPH on a regular basis, then you most certainly do want the better tire.

Nothing is funnier than seeing someone spend $2000 on rims and $600 on tires and come back in 2 months wondering why he is sliding all over the road, wearing the tire faster than snow melting in hell, and has serious high speed wheel vibration.

Z rated ZR tires support sustained speeds above 186 MPH. If I am planning on racing and I know that the point failure is the tire, then that is the single most important system to spend money on. Point of fact, my rims will be $1000 and my tires will be $2000. They will ONLY be on to race but that is the whole point.

they arent new ive been running them since october, but i got them in 225/45

 

well since we are on a thread about tires... what is the largest width we can go on the stock rim? I was looking into doing a 225/40 will that fit on the stock rims? I am personally going to to with the Falken 512s... I have used them before and love them... They are decently priced and wear okay for a W rated tire... plus here in the midwest we get snow and the Pirellis suck in the snow and the falkens do okay!

This about speed ratings on tires:

"When Z-speed rated tires were first introduced, they were thought to reflect the highest tire speed rating that would ever be required, in excess of 240 km/h or 149 mph. While Z-speed rated tires are capable of speeds in excess of 149 mph, how far above 149 mph was not identified. That ultimately caused the automotive industry to add W- and Y-speed ratings to identify the tires that meet the needs of new vehicles that have extremely high top-speed capabilities."


The Rosso's are expensive tires, but good ones.
