Steering wheel shaking after new wheels/tires

Long story short, steering wheel shakes/jiggles with my new wheels/tires Enkei EKM3s 18x8 and tires are Potenza re760 sports 235/40/18 on stock ride height, but the thing is, it does it at random speeds, and random parts of roads, so I was thinking maybe since I have "Sport" tires, it sacrifices some comfort for grip and I'm just feeling more of the road? I tried to take a video when I was driving today, which I just realize is sideways :( :thumbsdow

Did you get your wheels balanced when you put them on?

HB_SS/TC 02-14-2011 11:46 PM

rebalance the tires

This. I got my v12s put on this past weekend and my tires need to be rebalanced.

Phyrric 02-14-2011 11:48 PM

Wow I'm so retarded, I told em I was gonna pass on it since I was lowering the car soon but I dont think its happening right away, Am I doing any damage to the car or just a shittier ride?

CleanCut 02-14-2011 11:53 PM

(re) balance your tires /thread

08ssedan 02-15-2011 12:00 AM

No damage being done, just a pain in the ass

need to be a bit more specific. Does the wheel shimmy back and forth while holding on...or are you just feeling the vibrations through the steering wheel? A shimmy is an imbalance for sure..could be tires or could be wheels themselves. Either way, you should be able to balance that out....even with wider rims and tires. I'm gonna rule out anything else (suspension) because this all started with the new stuff. The stock set up (my car) is smooth as silk...so should your new set up.
One other thing..make sure the wheel is HUB CENTERED..not just bolted up. Wheels should come with hub ring for hub centric mounting. Otherwise you could get imbalance ON THE CAR (although balanced OFF the car).

It's deff the tire balance that I need, there's no vibration, the wheel just jiggles back and forth slightly

Ok..how about the hub rings? Did they provide them?

Here is a link to order them for our car and Enkie wheels:

Unbalanced tires may also lead to make the tires wear off the wrong way

09sscalicobalt 02-15-2011 01:00 AM

its either the balance or you need an alignment

myfakeevo 02-15-2011 01:01 AM

you should always rebalance your tires if you changed them

09sscalicobalt 02-15-2011 01:07 AM

yup this is true i only get alignment after i lower the car or about once a year

DiabeticKripple 02-15-2011 01:09 AM

definatly need to balance

arman14 02-15-2011 01:13 AM

Did you get hubcentric rings?

I have no idea, I never took the wheels out of the box, all I know is I got wheels, and then they said they found locking lugnuts in the box, I don't think they'd mention finding hubcentric rings to any normal customer though haha

arman14 02-15-2011 01:30 AM

Take a wheel off and see by yourself.
I had the same issue back when I had my cobalt,I just put some hubcentric rings on and the shaking was gone :guns:
Does the steering wheel also shake when breaking?

08ShowbaltLS 02-15-2011 01:32 AM

hey billy take the car down to cruisngold on 192. they will balance the tires, went there for mine and they have a nice "road force balancer". i would check the wheel real quick to see if it has the hubcentric ring before you go though, its a black plastic ring

You can check by taking the wheel off..you'll see an inner plastic or metal ring on the inner side inside the center hole. Sometimes it pulls off and gets stuck on the hub itself..which is fine, if you put the same style wheel back on. If you still don't know..have someone check for you. You want to mount the wheel with those on, or you can get an imbalance..even if it balances off the car!

was it necessary to have your camera sideways and playing shitty music?

was it necessary to make a useless post? :twothumbs

it sounds like a balance issue. Like everyone said already get them rebalanced and check for the hubcentric rings.
