Tire Advice?

I've never really had a car which required a certain style/type/rated tire. But the cobalt is a different story. It needs W/Y rated tires.

I found a set of 4 Bridgestone Potenza S001 Tires on CL locally for $450. They're pulloffs and only have 426 miles on them. They're the correct size, 225/40/R18 92Y rated. I'm in South Eastern PA, outside of Philadelphia, and I'm not sure if these full on sport summer tires would be good in rainy conditions.

Has anyone ran these before?

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

They're a Summer tire. There is also a run flat version but don't know if you care.

You'd be fine running them.

Yep they should be fine in the rain. Just don't run summer performance tires in temps lower than about 40F. The rubber compound stiffens up and they become a hazard. Great deal too; they are around $950 for a set new!

Here's their description from Tirerack:

However, like all summer tires, they are not intended to be driven in near freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

The Potenza S001 features an asymmetric design combining a large outboard shoulder, interlocking tread blocks and a central circumferential rib to enhance dry road steering response, high-speed stability and cornering precision. Notches in the shoulders expel water to the sides while high-angle lateral grooves in the intermediate ribs pump water into the wide circumferential grooves to help resist hydroplaning.

The tire's internal structure features a lightweight belt package consisting of twin steel belts supported by a spirally wrapped aramid/nylon cord reinforcement that reduces rolling resistance, enhances ride quality and ensures high-speed durability. Active rubber inserts in the sidewalls near the bead areas tune vertical sidewall stiffness to blend cornering grip with ride comfort, as well as increase longitudinal stiffness to generate straight-line braking forces.

Just going to throw this out there, you don't need a W or Y speed rating unless you're going to drive the 170+ mph that those tires are rated for. If you're driving like a normal human on the roads you're fine with a common T speed rating. The tire size you are looking for are low profile which are typically used on sportier cars hence you usually get a higher speed rating.

That all said, the Potenza is a good tire, however they tend to have a short lifespan due to the soft grippy rubber that is used. That is a good price however.

As far as rain goes, a summer only tire is the best tire you can have in the rain. Almost of the tread is designed to move water. Unlike an all season tire where part of the tread has to be designed for snow.
