Vintage Gold SS/TC Wheels
Vintage Gold SS/TC Wheels
Hey everyone,
Posted this over on DYC, but also wanted to put it here for other Cobalt owners to see how it turned out.
DipYourCar just came out with a new line of plastidip colors last month, one of which is Vintage Gold. It's a nice color, isn't "blingy" gold, more similar to stock STI wheels. Anyways, went ahead and ordered a wheel kit with one can of glossifier (that I didn't use, may put on one coat this coming weekend), and layed it over my gunmetal/metallic SS/TC wheels.
I put bags over the brake systems, and used index cards to separate the tires from the rims. Overall, I love the way the project turned out, and it's such a nice color. I'd like to hear your comments and questions!
EDIT: Linked thumbnails to full-size images, right-click -> open in new tab to see the full resolution!

As far as questions to why I didn't take the wheels off, it's the method used daily by DYC at their physical location for dipping customer wheels.
I was going to take the wheels off, but couldn't really justify the extra time involved to do so. About 6-8 minutes to place bags over the calipers, and put in index cards, while being able to paint all four wheels consecutively. This was the main time-saver, you can dip RF wheel, move to RR, then LR, then LF; by the time you finish the LF, the the RF is dry and ready for the next coat. As oppposed to jacking up the car, removing one side's wheels and leaving it on jackstands, then putting wheels back on, lowering car, and moving to the other side to do the next two.
Thanks for the input and comments, I appreciate it guys!

this is how I did it. too annoying to remove tires.
I like this color. I might try it on my HHR SS. Its VR also and I have black pastidipped wheels right now. I'm wondering if mine will be a darker gold if I tried this cuz my base layer would be straight black rather than gunmetal

I do like the new color better than the gun metal.
