Why both 4x100 & 5x110 on different Cobalt models
I don't understand the reason behind having both 4x100 & 5x110, on different Cobalt models.
It has to be costly to design, produce, service, & inventory, all of the different parts.
Hubs , rotors, wheels, ABS systems, ect.
Why ?
Do other car/truck makers do this too ??
Is it really less costly to produce, the 4x100 system for the base low cost models ?
The old, " a penny saved, is worth a million bucks", in car manufacturing, is that why, & true ?
Is there a reason that they need to step up to 5x110 ?
You can get a Cobalt with front disc brakes, with the 4x100 setup, but once you step up to
rear disc brakes, why the need then, for GM, to step up to 5x110 ?
Is it a vehicle weight break point ?
Can't be an engine HP point, as going from 2.2, to 2.4 is what, 10 HP ?
Or is it , going from 2.2 to 2.4, causes a need, to go from 4x110, to 5x110 ?

Both are probably common to other vehicles so really the inventory is to main issue. A guess which might be totally wrong is that the 2.4 is used in larger cars which require the extra strength. To save time and cost they simply took as much of the powertrain as possible and moved it to other vehicles. The ss/na has stiffer suspension than the base model too. That changes the load requirements.
Yes other companies do it too. Some in even more confusing ways.
The camry has a regular rear suspension and se suspension. The se has a different bushing but its a different size which requires a different size collar and tube so the part length is the same.
The altima front subframe on the new car is identical to the previous generation. They are interchangeable and built on the same line but some parts are built by different companies because the "new" one is cheaper but changing over the "old" one for service to match requires recertifying it which isn't worth the extra cost.
