Cobalt SS Review

They state that GM says it will be .1-.2 seconds slower in the quarter. You guys should swap out those wheels for some nice 17's

The only significant option is a performance package bundling an effective limited-slip differential with truly great Recaro front seats. Don't buy a Cobalt SS without them.
OK how come every magazine has a blurb about this "performance" option but GM doesn't have any way to order it with the CobaltSS.

"Don't buy a Cobalt SS without them." How about you CANT buy a Cobalt SS with them !

it's not available yet. the redline's should have it as an orderable option in mid february, probobly when the SSs/c is on the lots you'll be able to order it

i'm hoping i can order it for my '04, but it's looking unlikely, the total cost for the performance package is ~1500, but an LSD alone for me is likely to run that much...

oh well, at least we have equal length halfshafts...

well, they might say that it will trail it, but truth is, it doesnt...unless motortrend got ahold of a ringer...

Its heavier... metal instead of plastic body panels. 18's instead of 17's... it adds up.

Motortrend, C&D and SCC say it's supposed to be lighter.... 2 doors vs. 4, aluminum control arms and other suspension parts vs. steel etc.
The difference is in unsprung weight, which those 18's really escalate on the Cobalt.

I wonder how much difference buying some lighter weight wheels would make in handling and driving feel? They say that the stock wheels weight 25lbs a peice, anyone know how much Racing Hart C5 18's would weigh?

You need to check your numbers all indications are that the cobalt will be lighter than the redline. MT is quoted at 2806 lbs. Gmcanada agrees with this number the last time I checked only the main chevrolet web site still list the 2991 number for weight. It may have steel panels but the structure and hardware for four doors instead of two is heavy. And as for the heavy wheels the cobalt has aluminum A-arms which I am am pretty sure the Redline does not, unsprung weight should be about the same for both even with the larger wheel on the cobalt, and besides wheels are one of the easiest things to change on any car. All of this argument about which is faster or which is heavier is crazy anyway. I would bet that they will be so close in aceleration that it will be a drivers race. The better driver in either car will win. We will just have to wait and see, and until someones weighs the cars on a accurate scale one after the other we may never know wich one is lighter.

Ps Zstyle beat me to it, he posted while I was typing.

the cast C5s are 28LBS!!! didn't see any other C5s
the lightest 18s i saw were the mazdaspeed ms-01(too bad they say mazdaspeed on them) at 16lbs which is 9lbs lighter than the cobalt's....what were they thinkin with the heavy wheels?

The weights are very similar and I don't know why this is such a large issue. When it comes down to it, it's your preference between the cobalt and the redline and as mentioned earlier the driver.

For me, the 18's kick ass don't care how much they weigh, I want my car made out of steel not plastic (what is this a tercel!!!), and for the spoiler (it can be changed) and I'm not to concerned about what's behind me.

Im pretty sure it comes in leather, might not be the best quality but it will do.

This is pretty weird!

Ok check this out:

Dented pipe

and here:
Dman's post - 4th picture down

On both pictures of the engine bay the pipe leading from the airbox has the EXACT same dent in it? What gives?

Obviously, it's a dent and has nothing to do with the part itself for production but 2 preproduction SS S/C coupes with the exact same dent in their intake pipe. Weird.

Anyone know what's up?

I think the "dent" is really not a dent but it had something to do with the air valve in the duct infront of the Sc take a look at the animation it puts the valve in about the same location

The "dent" is there to give clearance to the hydraulic strut that is attached to the hood.

So then is the 'dent' not a preproduction accident and will be in the production SS as well?

Hope this doesn't cause any problems with aftermarket CAI or what not.
