hey guys i would really like some input on this::

My buddy has a 06 ss/sc and he just got it about a month ago, the check engine light was on and it is the:

IAT SENSOR 1 CIRCUIT HIGH INPUT

AND

MAF OR VAF CIRCUIT LOW INPUT.

wat does this mean and what can it do to his car. And what needs to be done to have it fixed.

well, IAT = Intake Air Temp, Sensor 1 would be your ambient air...before any cooling mods.


MAF = Mass Air Flow...the thing that tells the motor how much fuel to burn with the amount of air.


High input might mean its reading too high(ex. 150%)....and the MAF is seeing too low of numbers.

 

Both sensors are in the same thing, the sensor in the intake, commonly referred to as the MAF sensor. It also reads IAT1. Clean it maybe?

 

Clean it, if it doesn't work, then replace it.

 

he has an aftermaket intake which doesnt reach but about 7 inches out from the super charger.

is that safe for his car??

 

ditch the intake, clear the codes and move on

That short of an intake had to move his MAF sensor so Im willing to bet that that is the problem

 

but will it harm his car if he continues to run with this short intake. I thought that it would since it would be sucking in hot air close to the engine.

 

companies make short ram intakes all the time. I don't like them, but they are not bad for the car.

 

gottya, he did stall out one time her in town and we had to push him out of the highway, his info screen was reading engine power reduced. and it would bearly idle. i reset the cpu and it has ran fine.

have you all ever seen engine power reduced on the info screen. I know i have never.

 

i haven't, but a lot of people do get it.

actually alot of intake makers for the lsj claim that the maf has to be in the exact position it is stock

 

This is typically true for most cars. The main problem with the cobalt SS/SC is because of where the MAF is positioned and because of the bends in the intake, if the air flow is not exact to stock and the MAF is not in the right position then the MAF and IAT will not correlate. if the PCM detects the air flows are different it thinks there is a leak or MAF malfunction and will put the car in LIMP mode (engine power reduced).

 

exaclty. like stated, the maf should be in the fender well, not a few inches from the supercharger. ditch the shitty intake, and either go back to stock or get a real one that has the maf in the correct location. should solve the problem.

 

The car is shaky enough when the maf is in the stock location...

 

Yea def buy a better intake, and just for laughs can we see a picture of this intake?

 

Provided that he has not damaged his MAF sensor, it is most likely caused by an erradict amount of airflow over the sensor. Having a bigger diameter intake can throw of the airflow rating of the MAF sensor.

Is he also getting either P0171 or P0172 codes?
