View Full Version : Antenna ???
might be a dumb question but if u get the XM radio option does that mean there's no antenna on the car. I was at the auto show in detroit and was curious but the guy there didnt know anything and the car itself had an antenna which is one of the ugliest feature on any car.
Archplsm 01-31-2005, 08:49 AM With the XM radio you will still have the regular antenna. The radio works in bands..... XM reciever band, radio band, CD band, and so on. So yes you will have a XM antenna and a regular antenna if you get the XM radio option
looks like ill have to take it off myself, thanx
bbirk 01-31-2005, 01:21 PM Does anyone know if it is a retractable? Or is it always up?
b-spot 01-31-2005, 01:29 PM I thought it was shark fin style? Has it changed?
Archplsm 01-31-2005, 01:57 PM the standard radio antenna is non-retactable. the XM antenna from what I can tell has not changed in recent models for GM, so it sould be the small "shark fin" antenna mounted infront of the sunroof location
aka_Matt 01-31-2005, 09:29 PM actually, the XM antenna is centered on the rear edge of the roof, just infront of the back window...
See i'm a lil confused, b/c the car at the autoshow had both the non-retracting antenna and the shark fin. I was really hoping that just the shark fin would be there cuz as i have mentioned before antennas are ugly.

Yea, the regular antenna is fugly! I also wish GM made the XM antenna to match the body color like in the luxury cars. It looks crappy in that plastic black
aka_Matt 02-01-2005, 12:53 AM what i can't understand is y this brand new car has a 50yo mast antenna, when cars like the malibu, monte, and impala have the antenna in the rear window... even my '99 alero had it in the window 6yrs ago...
cruwl cobalt 02-01-2005, 02:20 AM i got ya beat my 1979 chevy 3/4 ton pick up had the attana in the front windshield

The one on the front in the commercial is the BlondeStar antenna
Archplsm 02-04-2005, 12:07 AM I don't know how many people here remember the old windshield antennas, but all car manufacters had to remove them from the windshield because they posed a danger to the car occupants durring a front end accident (people were getting deep gashes from the wires in the windshield). recently I have seen more manufacters going to the rear window antennas as stated above. So far they do not appear to pose any danger, but the windshield antennas were around for a while before being removed. I would really like to see an antenna layered into the paint on the car, this is completly possible and probably cheaper than the old post antenna.

Better yet, wire them into the "erector-set" style aluminum spoilers everybody's putting on their racers. (not really, but it would work)
The antenna is one of the easiest things to play with by yourself. I've seen people rig up their rear window defroster to their antenna, I've seen people hard wire them to a portion of the frame, just don't use that same portion to ground anything.
My 86 K5 Blazer has a sheet of aluminum foil kinda stuff above the headliner and below the dynamat in the roof, I pick up radio stations 100 miles away.
The thing is, do something different with it or just leave it alone. Either way, it'll be exactly how you want it.

P.S. the XM antenna on the Convertible C6 is the most ugly piece of god forsaken four foot zit on a beluga whale body color plastic I've ever seen. MY question is if they can take the OnStar antenna an intigrate it into a plastic case on the top of the inside of the windshield in the Corvette, why can't they do the same for the XM antenna?
