Still confused on changing LSD or whole tran.

Someone said it was cheaper to change the whole tranny then to just buy a lsd and add that onto a non g85.

why is that?

i wasnt lsd on my cobalt because im soon to go turbo. i would love to spend under 1000 but i know its not going to happen. so whats the cheapest route but still a good quality lsd or tran to go with.

someone help me out thanks

i'd say ge tthe lsd and put ti on to your tranny you have now it seems pointless and more costly just to get a new tranny and then put the lsd on it

that sounds a bit ludiacris to me, new tranny+lsd+labor opposed to lsd+labor, one less variable, sounds to me that it would be cheaper to do it to your tranny you have now, unless someone can explain why, i mean i dunno the tranny may be dirt cheap , but my opinion remains until shown diff

i understand were your comming from hence the reason i made the thread. i reviewed previous threads about putting lsd into a non g85 and they said getting a new tranny is cheaper. but im still confused.

i guess i will have to call the dealer tomorrow and find out what labor charges are for doing a lsd.

****Anyone know a good lsd to purchase, or is the stock one for g85 good?

New LSD tranny would run ~$3K

Check on the cost of the LSD + the cost of Removal/installation and tear-down and reassembling your tranny:

if your unable to open the tranny up yourself to install the lsd, its cheaper to buy another tranny. its just under $1000 for a quaife lsd, plus your going to be minimum 3 hours labor to install it (not including re/re time), so your another $300 minimum. if your able to hunt down a good used lsd tranny, it will be under $1000. now also figure in you can sell your old non g85 tranny later and recoup a bunch of money that way.

That's what I did. I looked on car-part.com and got a used LSD tranny out of a rollover with only 17k on it for $1100 shipped ($925 + shipping). Unfortunately I only have an 04 transmission so I can only sell it to other people with 04 IRLs. (fking speed sensor).

With the money you'll save on the transmission you can also go pick up a new clutch. Since it's about $600 to pull the trans you might as well get the clutch and everything else replaced while you're at it so you don't have to open it again.

the only lsd you want is a quaife. iirc you can buy the obx off e-bay for dirt cheap because, well, its built cheap. quaife builds the lsd for gm for the g85 tranny. consider us lucky, being gm paid for all the r&d, quaife can sell them for $950-ish to us upposed to $1499 for most other vehicles

new trans with lsd 2300
labor to drop and reinstall tranny 500-1k depeind where you go

2800-3300 for a BRAND NEW tranny with a lsd properly installed

your tranny=free
lsd 1k
droppping the tranny 500-1k
labor to install the lsd I bet on a min of 300-500

1800-2500 for your used tranny with a questionable install of the lsd..sicne its not an easy part to install.

do it right the first time and just by a new tranny. Plus, you will have a spare if your new tranny ever breaks.

Install replacement MU3 transmission : 8.0 hours labor x $80/hr= $640

Install LSD in your MU3 transmission: 12.0 hours labor x $80/hr= $960 (add another 3.0-4.0 hours to this time if you want a full rebuild)

Difference in labor between two options= $320

(feel free to plug in your local labor rate. If a shop is charging more than about a half hour over these times, they are making their own times up/ripping you off potetnially)

Yes, thats a full install, including R&R of the transaxle itself.(you bring the whole car and diff)

So youd be looking at 4 hours labor if your just installing the diff into the case.(you bring the trans and diff)
