need a handful of questions answered

instead of posting a bunch of discussions in a few forums, i just decided to make one big one
alright, so i have a 96 cavalier. meh. its ghetto as hell right now, but that's not the point
anyways

the basic story is my dad won't still pay for insurance if i get a new car, so instead of saving up to buy a new car i may just turn the cav into what i'm looking for; a manual convertible!

so
1: What places would do a hardtop-convertible service? Price area? I know i couldn't do this myself, as its not just a matter of ripping the top off, but that its got alot more to it to make sure the driver's supported in case of a rollover, etc
2: I could get a manual trans for 300 off of car-part.com, how much would labor typically be?? (I pay lower labor costs than most people, so just tell me how many hours you think a shop would need?)
3: once i do do a manual conversion, what are some little cheap ways to make it a bit faster?
4: How hard would it be to rebuild the top half of the engine?

and finally...

wtf is this?

If you dont have enough money to buy a new car or pay for insurance you shouldnt be going on fruitless endeavors with your beater.

i could easily save up like 8k and get a 1999-2002 miata, which is actually what i want, but nah I can't pay for insurance because if i was on my own policy it'd be 2000 a year cause i'm 17 even though i have a clean record

and mechanically i've fixed most of the things that are WRONG with it, now its just a matter of making it better
