How much money???
How much money???
How much money do you guys think it would take to mass produce cars? Like GM or Toyota??? I was curious maybe one day if I have billions of dollars I will open my own company.
well usually you dont use all of your own money to do such a thing. You show banks and people who will invest that you have a game plan and some figures and make it all nice and pretty then they give you lots and lots of money to build factories and such.
And No it would cost way more than a billion to make a factory Like a GM or Honda or Toyota or any big name factories. It costs probably 20 million per machine they have that makes parts. Some More some less but still A billion is pocket change when it comes to **** like that.

GM?
I'm actually not too bummed that GM isn't making the Cobalts anymore. I LOVE my car, don't get me wrong, but I'd rather they kill it while it's good then just make a new one that gets worse and worse. Wouldn't be the first time...
Investing that billion in Toyota would probably net you a better return than mass-producing cars yourself. You wouldn't need billions, you'd need tens of billions for your first set of factories and employees alone, that's not counting production ramp-up costs, advertising, sales and marketing, train/truck transportation, etc...
Let's not lose sight of the first step, getting that first billion... wouldn't want to put the cart before the horse, now would we?

i was talking to a retired toyota engineer, he actualy helped design the toyota U750F 5 speed automatic thats in the tacoma/4 runner/tundra/lexus. he said that transmission design and machine tooling cost over $2 billion before the first tranny rolled off the assembly line.
To get maybe 1 factory built, up and running to make 1 car, I would guess would be around $750 million. If it were a sports car, maybe $2 billion. But you also have to make a car that can sell / people want to buy, otherwise you go bankrupt.
It would be much easier to buy a stake in a company, Dodge migh be looking for a new byer soon...

Well I happen to work at one of the auto makers mentioned above, but anyways, they are in the process of building a new plant. Well some co-workers and I estimated, just to get the basic tooling and structure of this plant is going to be around $1 billion. That's not included all of the special dies and what not, plus you know it can get pretty expensive before you get a car to the quality where you can actually start producing it.
or GMC = one of a few pointless GM brands
for a cast wheel the mold is 25000 and thats good for 4000 sets of wheels
a forged mold is good for 250000 dollars.
also, remember reading about ford being able to use FORD factories as colateral. i don't rememeber the numbers but thats the price for a factory. mass production is certainly not cheap.

I wonder how much it'd cost for the equipment to make tube-frame bodies like the ariel atom? Small companies that hand-make small number of cars would be a much more plausible idea for an individual who's not uber rich to create.
